I have identified my earliest Cantrell ancestor as Richard
CANTRELL born about 1640 in Bakewell Parish, Derbyshire,
England. He and wife Alice, had a son, Richard. He was
christened May 13, 1666.

Richard married Dorothy JONES, March 5, 1691 in
Philadelphia, PA. They had at least 4 children, Joseph
being one of them. Richard died May 1753 in Philadelphia,
PA.

Joseph was born 1695 in Philadelphia, PA. He married
Catherine. The rumor has it she was Catherine HEATH,
the daughter of John and Hannah HAINES
Heath, in New Castle Co., PA about 1718, but no
documentation is available as yet. Joseph and
Catherine had 8 children, the oldest being John.

John was christened March 25, 1726, at the Old Swedes
Church in Wilmington, DE. By 1743 he was married. There
is question as to his wifes name. John had 10 children
between 1744 and 1757. He is recorded in the Orange Co.,
NC Deeds & Records Books, having purchased land. He died
Feb., 1803 in Spartanburg, SC.

John's son, Abraham, was born 1744 in New Castle, Lawrence
Co., PA.. He married Lucy WATSON and they had at least 4
children: Abraham was born 1769, Richard was born Mar. 10,
1771 in Rockingham Co., TN, John was born 1773 in Stokes,
Danbury Co., NC & Watson being born 1775. Abraham SR.

South Carolina area. John died 1850, Warren Co., TN.

BINNING. Their marriage took place in Greenville Co., SC.,
1820. Sampson was authorized a land patent April 24, 1820
for his stake in Huntsville, Pickens Co., AL. Sampson and
Sophronia had 5 children between 1821 and 1832. In 1850,
the Census Records show he is residing in Smithville, DeKalb

Sampson is living with his oldest son James M. in Ashley
Co., AR, 1880.

James M. was born 1821 in Greensville SC. At this time I
have not found a wife for him but I do know he had 2
children whom his parents raised. In 1850 he is residing
with his Uncle John BINNING in Pickens Co., AL. He enlisted
with only a double barrel shotgun for the Civil War at
Sumner Co., TN. He was assigned to Co. A,16th Tennessee
Infantry and then to Co. A, 7th Tennessee Calvary. This
battalion was in charge of guarding supplies for General
Zollicoffer in Kentucky and guarding the railroad above
Gallatin during the retreat from Bowling Green by the
Confederate Army. Here they received a rather famous order,
"Keep the Railroad open whether you can or not". This
battalion also was part of the battle at Shiloh, where a
member of this command received the surrender of General
Prentiss' command. Jan. 3, 1889 James M. Cantrell was
