On Gazing at The Sphinx

By Robert James DeBurgh (Poet)

I have scaled the heights of Mountains
I have sailed across the sea, on a ship.
I have trudged across the Desert
'Til my boots were full of sand,
And I tell you friend it was Grand
To watch the Sun rise and the Sun-set too
And to watch the Stars twinkle-twinkle in the
Clearest Desert nights,
And to see the Camels, th' bells, and th' other amazing
Sights.
But the thing I most remember
It's the thing 'bout which I thinks now,
Is the moment that first I clapped my
Eyes upon the Sphinx, WOW!

O! She is old. O! She is old. O! She is O! so old.
As old as old can be, is She!
(But not as old as Ninevah, that's what they
Told to me)
Her face is scarred, Her claws are smashed,
O! She has seen some strife!

Strife!

Ah! Now I recognize her!
She reminds me of MY WIFE!

Cairo June 1889

NOTES ON PROVENANCE:
This Particular Work was discovered in Tripoli in 1925 by an antique Bookseller. (the seller was Antique, not the books). It was found tightly rolled and shoved down the spine of a rather tattered copy of "Gulliver's Travels". The Bookseller, immediately recognised it as from the Pen of RJ de B and contacted the local Chapter of The Society.

NOTE:
This piece contains another reference to the mysterious Mrs DeBurgh. (see notes at the end of "The Seashell")
What is even more interesting is that it caused B. Svertlovich and Q. Fletcher to actually AGREE on something! IE: That it is entirely possible that Mrs de B and The Master, didn't exactly see eye to eye....
