Noman Masood! The name conjures
up an image of a strongly-built but gentle-looking young guy, with a soft voice to match;
the guy you have mostly associated with soft, silent roles on TV. But, Noman the actor is
not one-dimensional: he can be many men. And, the recently concluded Inkar goes to show
just that. Noman proves his versatility by playing a negative character, and for once the
actor truly shines.
No wonder, Noman is on a new high, what with all the praise hes being larded with,
post-Inkar. Its like people are finally waking up to the actor in him.
Noman has been around for the last about 8 years, and has had the chance to work in about
a dozen TV serials. He has to thank his lucky stars, for most of his plays have met with
success, be it an Aahan or Bandhan or a Pehli Barish. But, the shy guy has somehow always
shied away from the fourth estate, with the result that you couldnt get to see him
staring out of magazine interviews like everyday. He was right in a way; he didnt
need to say anything, his successes spoke for him.
Noman made his acting debut in 1993 with Shakir Uzairs Shahbaz. The clean-shaven
youth went rather unnotices in the play, but this didnt deter him at all. There was
a gap of about three years before Noman came back in Wasi Shahs Aahan, this time
with a bang. And then, as they say, there was no looking back for him. Bandhan followed,
and so did a lot or praise.
Bandhans Afaq is still fresh in the viewers mind and the reason is simple that
he is natural and acts without any aid of fake thing. Then came another successful serial
in his belt that proved his acting capabilities to the fullest and that was Neend along
with Maria Wasti. Though after that he did a hosts of serials like Tawan, Khawab Azab,
Mohabbatein and Muskarahat but what he did in Inkar was simply amazing. Coming in a
negative role at a time when you can be written off from tube for just a mistake, he had
managed himself and the character he played became one of his successful roles.
Recognizing the actor in him, one of the most senior directors put in a few words for him.
He does those characters, few heroes could do. After the success story of
Inkar, he is seen these days in a host of serials like Wardi, 23 Din, Dil Lagi besides
working on his own production.
So, how did you come up with the idea of portraying a negative role after years of coming
as a hero? We have stereotype concepts about things. A hero must be good looking and
villan must be the ugliest person on earth. It was the first time, the director tried some
thing different in Inkar and the results were simply amazing. Now that the idea has caught
on.
While take about his most awaited serial Wardi, he says, For 22 days, I had to live
in jail to get the feel of the character.
Quite confident about his abilities, he gives his best and leaves the rest to the public
to decide. While asking about his expectations, the guy was of the view, I never
expect anything, if I do good work, today, then I will be working in future As such there
are no short cuts. What does the guy have to say about the declining standards of
drama, Looked from the entertainment standards, today, a drama scores high but lacks
content wise.
The guy is completely indifferent with the showbiz lot, for him there is no competition.
How come? Kashif Mehmood or Faisal Qureshi are actors in their own right. While I
draw inspiration from the likes of Humayun Saeed, Noman Ejaz and Faisal Rehman.
The worst thing about having an acting career, is ones loss of privacy while one can
enjoy shopping discounts without even asking for them.
He is fortunate enough to have worked with the most senior artists. When asked about his
experience of working with different directors, Noman answers, Almost all the
directors I have worked with are experienced and I had a very good time working with them
which gives me much satisfaction by the end of day.
