# The definite article “ the”:

_ We don’t use “the” when we talk about something in general.

e.g. I like to watch football games.

_ We use “the” when we talk about something in particular.

e.g. I like to watch the football games of German team.

# Articles:

_ we don’t use articles in the following situation:

1. Institutions( often preceded by prepositions):

at home, to school, to church, at college, to attend university, to be in a prison, to go to bed. _ when we go to these institutions for their purpose , we don’t use “the” ,but if we go to these institutions for another reason we should use “the”.

e.g. Ahmed went to school.                        Student in the school.

e.g. Ahmed`s father went to the school to see the headmaster.

 

Note: we always use “the “ with “ mosque”.

e.g. .I went  to the mosque to pray Al- Maghrab.

 

2.Means of transport (proceeded by by):

                           by car , by train, by bus, ……

e.g. . I go to school by bus.

 

 

3. Times of the day and night :

    ( at dawn, before sunrise, around noon, after midnight, at night)

e.g. I left before sunrise.

·But  we use “the” with the followings: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening.

e.g. we go to school in the morning.

 

 

 

 

4. Meals:

             ( to have breakfast, to get lunch ready, to eat supper/dinner)
