# Relative Clause :

1. who / person / sub.

e.g. The teacher is a person who teaches pupils.

 

2. which / things.

e.g. I have read the book which I bought.

 

3. where / place.

4. when / time.

e.g. It was Friday when I saw him.

 

5. whose / possessive.

e.g. A laborer is a worker whose job needs strength rather than skill.

 

 

 

 

e.g. This is the room where I teach. 6. why / reason.

e.g.  He gets a low mark this is why I am angry.

 

7. how / manner.

e.g. Do you know how to make coffee?

 

8. whom / person / obj.

e.g. The doctor whom you saw is my friend.

 

9. that     >>>   who / which / whom.

 

 

 

·Types of relative clause :

.non- defining relative clause: add extra information about the head noun.

e.g. Children, who learn easily, should start school as soon as possible.   =   all.

 

 

2. Defining relative clause:  define the head noun.

e.g. Children who learn easily should start school as early as possible.  =  only.

 

3. Reduced relative clause:

_ we can omit the relative clause when it is not the subject of the sentence.

e.g. I bought the car which you told me about.  ( we can omit)

       The car, which I bought, is expensive.     ( we can not omit )
