The monument to Vercingetorix, the king of Gaul, in Clermont-Ferrand, France
Vercingetorix, Warrior Prince of the Old Tribe, we honor you as we walk the sacred path. In the falling of rain may we hear your song. In the towering green forest may we feel your strength, and in the sun bright fire may we know your passion! May we always remember your great sacrifice, fallen hero, and always speak your name with pride, Vercingetorix!
Imagine a people with a lust for life, yet no fear of death. A people whose word was their law, an unbrekable contract. A people of honor, bravery, and an unshakable appreciation of beauty and adornment. They propitiated their gods among forested groves and bubbling springs. They worshipped the Nature and believed in reincarnation. They were as skilled in the delicate arts of metallurgy as they were fearsome in battle. They were the Celts.
The Shrine to Vercingetorix
For the first time I became interested in the Celts after I saw "Highlander". This movie possessed all my thoughts and feelings. Everything Scottish became my favorite. I began to gather information and read everything about Scotland, and I discovered the fact that ancestors of the Scots were the Celts. If we look at the archaeological record about the Celts, we would find a society of fierce warriors that occupied most of west central Europe. The Celts were very specific and unusual tribal people. They were tall and blue-eyed. Most of them were clean shaven, but several wore long flowing moustaches. Being fierce warriors, they certanly weren't unwashed and uncultured barbarians. They were exceedingly careful of cleanliness and neatness. It was impossible to find among them any man or woman, even poor, who would be either dirty or ragged The Celts invented soap and were taking regular baths long before the Romans adopted the habbit. The Celts worshiped the Nature and believed in reincarnation. Their priests, druids, told them that after death the soul passes to the body of a newborn child. That's why the Celts didn't fear death. Their style of battle was unconventional and fierce. Diodorus describes them as going into battle wearing horned helmets, covered with blue paint or tattoos made from the wood plant. They were known to charge an army, hair flailing and screaming bloodthirsty war cries. The Celts are also known for their unique and beautiful style of art. A combinations of indigenous styles and classical and eastern influences, their artistic styles attest to their skill in metallurgy. Intricate designs are found on everything from swords and shields to decorative jewerly and torks. Not every person is fully able to understand the nature of this ancient people, to feel their adornment to the world around them, to look at everything by their eyes. So, let me express my admiration for the Celts, my Celtic dream...
