TOLDOT- THE TWINS
PARSHA IN A NUTSHELL: Rivkah, wife of yitzchok, after being childless for many years, gives birth to twins. Esav- a red haired boy and Yakov- white and tame. From the start you notice the difference, as Esav is interested only in hunting animals and playing in the field. Yakov spends time learning torah in the tent, day and night. One day Yakov is cooking soup, red lentil soup (his grandfather passed away and it is the traditional food for mourning), Esav comes in hungry from hunting. '"give me soup" he demands. Yakov says only if you sell me the 'firstborn rights' to which Esav agrees, and drinks the whole pot of soup.
COOK LENTIL SOUP! Baking is always a kids' activity and pouring in vegetables, making the soup red (just like esav) is fun for the kids. Recipe? each year we make it up but it comes out delicious. If you have a recipe please forward it. The children were busy cooking red lentil soup in the kitchen the whole year through!
YAKOV AND ESAV VERSION 1: PUPPETS Take paper bags. One the children color red, glue on red string for red hair and add eyes and a frown. For the other have the children color it, put on eyes, a smile, a kippah, tzitzit and even a torah (they sell stickers). The children love sticking their hands in the bag and acting out the roles. Version 2: Cut out the shape of a body and do the same as above. That is just figures that can be glued onto a paper or left as figures!
SONG: 613 TORAH AVENUE YAKOV AND EISAV WERE TWO SONS EISAV WAS RED! HE WAS A HUNTER, YAKOV LEARNED TORAH INSTEAD. YAKOV WAS COOKING SOUP, EISAV CAME IN HUNGRY, "I AM HUNGRY GIVE ME SOUP!" EISAV WAS SO GRUMPY!
TWINS! Now is a great time to discuss this. If you have twins in school, bring them in. Discuss how two babies are in mommy's tummy at the same time. They can look alike or not (bring pictures to proove). These twins were not alike at all!!!!
