SUKKOT
Get a big box (refrigerator....) and have the children paint it. cut out a door. go outside with everyone and collect branches and leaves and put it on the top. have the sukkah in the classroom and let the children play with it and eat in it (say leshev basukah in it...)
When you are making the sukkah, make a tool belt for the children, you can make small hammers, saw.. (learn the tools with them) and then they can help 'build' the sukkah. show them the video miracle days which has this idea in a song
To make a lulov and an esrog. real simple lulov: roll newspaper in the diagonal way, then fold it in half. then roll another roll, . width wise. put that in the half so you have a straight lulov and a branch on each side. tape all three together. and then have the kids paint it green esrog: cut out two circles of yellow, staple it three quarter way. have the children color the circles and then stuff it with cotton balls. staple shut. there is your esrog. esrog: you can also get the styrophon balls and paint them yellow if you want. it is really good to have an actualy lulov and esrog brought into class, but since you wont let them play with it, when each child has their own, they can all hold them by circle time and then sing the lulov song and all shake together . (see songs)
eddible sukkah: really fun for children even as small as two. wafers stacked with marshmallow fluff. and then pretzel sticks and green sour sticks as schach.
for simchas torah we made really cute flags. since it was the beginning of the year and we noticed how much the children love the torah by circle time we took this opportunity to let them each make their own. cut out the shape of a torah out of oaktag have the kids deocrate it . laminate that and back it with a little bit of velcro. take oaktag and make a flag (box) with two doors on it. have the chidren decorate the whole thing and then put velcro inside the two doors (the aron koddesh) and put the torah in there. for small children make the stick to the flag out of newspaper rolled as this is not dangerous , if it goes in their eyes..... the children love taking their torah in and out and dancign around the classroom.
