matzah

SCIENCE:
this is a good opportunity to bring in some science into your class. you can teach them what makes things rise/big or not. ....YEAST! at circle time, take two water bottles and fill each one with sugar and water. then show how you will add yeast to one and not to the other. (make a check on the yeast bottle and an x on the no yeast bottle). Put a balloon on the top of each one and place them on the windowsill. At the end of the day , one balloon will be blown up (the one with the yeast). enjoy seeing thier delighted looks!
DRAMATIC PLAY:
as you explain to the children that matzah came from the dough baking on their backs, you can create matzah backpacks. take two cardboard circles, have the children make them into matzahs. staple them half way around. and then add two ribbons from the top to the bottom, being the two straps of backpacks (thick ribbon. act out the story with them.

COOKBOOK: as you describe the steps of making matzah with them. a-water b-mixing it c-roll it d-poking holes e-baking it. and you actually do it (you can make it in your classroom if you do not have a matzah bakery to go to) you can create little matzah books which have the six steps. again if you want a copy of the little six step book of baking matzahs please email me and i will fax it.
HAGGADAH MATZAH PAGE:
give each child three matzahs to decorate (paint lines on it) cut one in half and put it in a plastic bag. put the plastic bag as your afikomen/tzafon page. put the other two on the matzah page.
BAKING MATZAHS:
get a box (regular size box of apples. oranges) and have the children glue on brown rectangles as bricks, making it an oven. cut open one of the wider sides as the door to the oven and when you are supervising place brown paint (a little bit ) on the floor. have the children put white matzahs on a spatula and place it in the oven,.....out will pop baked brown matzahs.`

MATZAH COLLAGE:
take matzah- break it up and glue it to a page to make a matzah collage.
SEWING MAZTAH:
hole punch a big yellow or brown circle and then they sew together the matzah (those are also the holes in the matzah)

Whatever you are coloring on, to get the 'ridged look' have the kids color the paper brown on lego. lego board or lego table. Because of the bumps, paper will look 'ridged' creating the real matzah look. Really Works!
