DIAPER PAIL SOLUTION
3 T baking soda
1/4 c white vinegar
1 gallon water
Mix well in pail. Soak cloth diapers and/or spit rags between washes.
WHITENING SOLUTION
1 gal hot water in bottom of washer
1c automatic dishwasher compound
1/4 c bleach
Mix well. Soak clothes for 30 mins. Wash as usual. Rinse with 1 c white vinegar in the water.
FIREPROOFING
9 oz borax
4 oz boric acid solution
1 gallon warm water
SOak clean clothes in solution until impregnated completely.
Dry as usual. Good for 20-30 washings, then repeat.
Window Cleaner
Combine 1/2 cup ammonia, 2 cups rubbing alcohol and 1 gal water.
Upholstery and Carpet Cleaner
Combine 1/4 cup dishwasher detergent and 1 cup warm water. With a hand mixer, whip until dry suds form (the suds will look like whipped cream). Shampoo only a small area at a time and use a spatula or rubber scraper to lift off dirty suds. Repeat if necessary, then wipe area with a clean cloth dipped in clear water and wrung nearly dry. Dry completely.
Carpet Spot Cleaner
Shaving cream blotted on the spot will remove most stains. For stubborn stains, scrub with the following, then rinse with clear water spray, then blot dry: 1/4 cup borax, 1/4 cup dishwasher detergent, 1 pint hot water.
Air Fresheners
Dampen cotton balls with oil of wintergreen, pine, (or my favorite, jasmine) and place out of sight but where air will touch them.
Drain Cleaner
Pour 1/4 cup baking soda down drain, followed by one pint distilled vinegar.
(Remember the homemade volcanoes we made in elementary school?) Rinse with one gallon boiling water.
Toilets and Tubs
For regular cleaning, I use 1/4 cup bleach in my toilets. However, after a few weeks, those water rings still manage to appear out of nowhere. For those stubborn rings, I mix 1/4 cup boric acid with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Scrub ring with paste. Rinse with water.
Stainless Steel
Simple....rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle works wonders on stainless steel and mirrors and leaves no streaks!
