The Emperor's New Clothes offers a delightful introduction to opera as well as a fun and humorous interpretation of the time-honored classic by Hans Christian Andersen.  The opera is set in a kingdom ruled by an Emperor known for his vanity and driven by his love of new clothes.  Chernaud (the Emperor's assistant) arranges for Reyalto (Chernaud's daughter) to marry a rich Duke and promises the Emperor a starring role in the marriage ceremony.  Reyalto, however, wants to marry for love.  She meets Simon (a tailor's apprentice), who is delivering a stunning robe to the Emperor.  When the Emperor discovers the robe is muddy and torn, he angrily locks Simon in a cage.  Through trickery and a little magic, Messienne (a gypsy) helps Reyalto free Simon and stop her wedding to the Duke.  Messienne and Reyalto pretend to be tailors who weave magic fabric.  They convince the Emperor that only loyal subjects can see the fabric.  Unaware that he has been tricked, the Emperor proudly wears his new "clothes."  Of course, we know this will lead to who will be honest and brave enough to admit, "The Emperor has no clothes!"
Riverside Players is also working with the Prairie du Sac Library to create "listening stations," where everyone can listen to and learn more about opera.  There will also be a Saturday workshop a week or so before the show, and a resource center where additional materials will be available.  These activities at the Library will be available beginning October 1st.  Please feel free to contact the Library for more information.
