| Almost everything built at RiverCity Woodworks is designed by me (Hal Johnston). Occasionally designers or decorators will bring a design for me to build from, but by and large, I do the bulk of the design work. I am able to adapt just about any style to the particular situation at hand, and the best customers bring or send pictures of an idea or ideas that they have seen in magazines or books. We can then take those ideas and make them fit the situation, or take the ideas and design something all new along the chosen theme. The nice thing about my designs is that through all of my experience in building homes, building custom woodwork for homes and commercial situations, and a background and education in art, I have the experience and ability to know what it takes to make the designs work, fit, and be installed on a job site. I also know what can and can not be made, and how to design so that things will stay together as the wood moves with seasonal changes in humidity. RiverCity Woodworks offers design services to builders, homeowners, and finish carpenters, as a way of helping everyone get what they want and having things turn out the way they expect. This doesn't always happen when homeowners talk to builders or carpenters that are not educated in the nuance of design balance and proportion, especially when the only drawings offered are sketches on blocks of wood or the walls where the woodwork is to be installed. Surprisingly enough, this is the way it works, in many cases. By utilizing our design service, the designs are clear for everyone to see, and if someone besides RiverCity Woodworks is to do the work, construction details can be included. Experience has proven, though, that the best workmanship comes from having RiverCity Woodworks do the construction as well as the design, as few are experienced in producing the details as they should be done. I am not saying that everything I design is an original idea. Almost all designing, whether by me or others, is mostly an adaptation of past ideas. I try to use whatever I see to make new and interesting designs. |

| The drawings shown on this page are included merely to show a variety of designs done for some customers in the past. This is in no way inclusive of all of the designs done over the years, and it should be noted that these are not complete designs. Completed designs have all dimensions, details, side and top views, and if necessary, instructions for the construction. Almost all design work is done on a CAD program, and with this technique, variations are easy to make, and drawings easy to modify. |
