Iloilo City is located in the heart of the Philippine archipelago occupying Panay Island's southeast end. It is 283 statute miles from Manila and is the gateway to the flourishing Western Visayas region.One of the most accessible cities in the country, it is about 55 minutes from Manila by plane and 20 hours by ship.

The total land area of the city is 6,852.2 hectares. In terms of land use, agricultural lands and open spaces total 2,694.2 has., residential use - 2,555.2 has, commercial use - 275.4 has., industrial use - 47.3 has, institutional - 245.9 has., aquacultural use - 866.1, and other uses - 168.1 has.

Based on the Comprehensive Land Use Plan of the city for CY 1998-2010, the total land area of the city is expected to increase by 56 has. through land reclamation during the planning period. Residential land use will increase by about 1,405 ha. through the conversion of agricultural lands and open spaces which will corresponding reduce such lands to 899.4 has. Of the existing agricultural lands and open spaces, only 971.1 ha. are actually utilized for productive agricultural activities which would mean that only 307 has. will be retained for such use.

On the other hand, commercial and industrial areas are also expected to expand considerably by 568.7 has. and 313.3 has., respectively, through the creation of new business parks in the vicinity of the Iloilo Airpor and the conversion of existing fishponds near that area and in other parts of the city.

In the case of lands for aquaculture use, it is anticipated that no fish ponds would exist by the 2010 in the city.
