Iloilo City is the educational center of Western Visayas. It has one of the oldest educational institutions in the entire Panay Island - the Colegio de San Jose, founded in 1872. Iloilo National High School built in 1906 is the first provincial public high school in the country. The University of San Agustin was established in 1904 and was made a concentration camp by the Japanese in 1941. Central Philippine University, a Protestant school, was founded by the Americans in 1905. In the same year, the Americans also established the first elementary school in the country, the Baluarte Elementary School in Molo, Iloilo City. One of the first campuses of the University of the Philippines outside of Diliman, Quezon City, is the University of the Philippines in the Visayas which was principally based in the old City Hall building, also in Molo. The most recent government school established in Iloilo City is the Philippine Science High School which sits in the sprawling lot of Brgy. Bitoon, Jaro, Iloilo City.
