Dad went to work making highways way back when Clara and I were real little, about 2 or 3 years old.
His brother Alvin worked on road construction and got him a job.  He started out as a grease monkey.  He worked his way up to a caterpillar operator.  He was supposed to have been one of the best there was.  Each job was for as long as it took to finish that particular job.  But he never had any trouble  getting another as far as I know.   Some times he was the last to finish up on a job and if the construction boss had another job to do, they told him to go to that job when he finished with the last one.He worked all over the southwest,  from California to Oklahoma and every state in between.
One year when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade, I went to seven schools in five states.
In Oklahoma, there was  a tornado the day after we left and completely demolished the trailer court we were in and the area around it.  Lucky, huh!
When I was in highschool Grandpa and Grandma bought a small neighborhood
store in Roswell.  Gramdpa worked on road construction and Grandma and us
girls ran the store and he came home weekends.
After that they just traded one business for another.
