Mother nature supplies an abundance of brilliant colours readily available to anyone's enjoyment. Natural dyes are extracted from roots, barks, flowers, leaves, stems, berries, lichens, mushrooms, even vegetables. Their color fastness is achieved by using a mordant such as a metal in powder form like alum, copper, iron or tin. More readily available mordants are vinegar, and salt. You can find easy dye mateirals in your backyard and in your kitchen such as, onion skins, marigold flowers, and black tea. On a nature hike you might find sumac berries, golden rod, dogfennel,  walnut hulls, or hickory bark. Imported exotic dyes include logwood, brazilwood chips, or cutch extract.

Rita Schwab specializes in natural dyeing using ancient recipes with combination dyes and mordants extracted from plants. The dying process becomes totally organic. Rita has studied with Native Cherokee Indians and derived her knowledge through historical literature, and ancient dye resources.

Rita Schwab also has a booklet available called "Something to Dye About". The booklet includes easy dye recipes, resources for Natural dye supplies, mordant information and more. Booklet cover is bound with naturally dyed handmade paper. The booklet price is $15.95 plus S&H. Please Email to place your order.
