A weaver since the late 1970's, I have more recently moved away from production crafts, where I had earned a living weaving placemats, rugs and scarves. The need of self expression and exploring my inner cosmic consciousness, my Fiberart is helping me connect my physical abilities and working with my hands with my spiritual existence. Through earth oriented ceremonies and meditative weaving circles I connect with my ancient memories, letting primitive weaves and designs surface. By wild-foraging natural fibrous materials such as driftwood, reeds, husks, vines and grasses, I create collages combining earth fibers with hand-woven fabrics. The yarns in these fabrics are exclusively natural fibers. Often they are handspun wools, raw silks, cottons, berbers, jute, hemp etc. These yarns are mostly dyed from natural fiber dyes, which are derived from berries, roots, barks, leaves, flowers or sawdust, which I collect and treasure. Working closely with the earth has become my major focus in my art and in my life. Earth honoring mandalas using ground bark clay and ashes for paints, natural handwoven fabrics and earth-gathered fibers form a circular fiber collage. Fiberphotos containing a central focus of a photographic nature image is another form of transforming nature's fibrous resources into a visual expression. As we enter the new millennium we need to reconnect with our spirit embedded in the earth energy. We need to learn to live harmoniously in balance with our planet. And our art is a viable step to educate and sensitize the general public. |
