| Gibbons are small slender tree dwelling ape. They inhabit the Tropical Rain Forests of South East Asia.They are arboreal i.e. spend most of the time in trees. They are characterized by long arms which are longer than legs.They generally walk by swing arm motion and stay high up in canopies of trees. There are Nine species of gibbon including Siamang, the agile dark gibbon. Except Lar gibbon all other gibbons are highly endangered or threatened. They face immidiate extinctio unless protected from humans. The major threat is habitat loss. The male and female are quite different in colour of hairs and can be easily differentiated. The are very agile in trees and so seldom fell prey to predators, but their birth rate is low. Group: Gibbon stay in monogamous pairs with infant or small juvenile. But this monogamy could be seasonal also in some species unlike mated pairs for life. India has only one species the Hoolock Gibbon, inhabiting the rain forests of Northeastern India. |
