~A GIFT FROM HEAVEN~

"I'll lend you for a little time
A child of Mine," He said,
"For you to love the while he lives
And mourn for when he is dead.
It may be six or seven years,
Or twenty two or three;
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care of him for Me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his stay be brief,
You'll have his loving memories
As solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
Since from all earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn,
I've looked the wide world over
In My search for teachers true,
And from all the throngs that crowd life's lanes,
I've selected you.
Now will you give him all your love,
Not think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to call
To take him back again."

I fancied that I heard them say,
"Dear Lord, Thy will be done."
For all the joy Thy child shall bring,
The risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may.
And for all the happiness we've known,
Forever grateful stay;
But should the angels call for him
Sooner than we've planned
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
And try to understand.

This poem was one that was printed in our church bulletin in September 1991 after a 5 year old girl from our church was hit by a car, on the same day my 1st son was due. She died instantly. I kept it as a reminder that all of our children are gifts from God. He entrusts them with us to love and nurture them and teach them of His love. Sometimes they are here for a very long time and sometimes His plan is for them to be with us for a short time before He calls them home to spend eternity with Him. Moms and Dads, please take time to smell the flowers with your children. Take time to laugh with them, to cry with them, to pray with them, to hug them and to let them know just how much you love them. We never really know for just how long the Lord has entrusted us with His child so treat every moment as a "Precious Moment".
