There is a unique quality that Red Cross disaster volunteers share: a willingness to spring into duty without knowing exactly what conditions they may be heading into. When the phone rings or their pagers go off, Red Cross disaster volunteers only know one thing: someone needs their help. This issue of Cross Rhodes chronicles a busy 72-hour period from earlier this summer. Our volunteers and staff answered the call, whether it was at a mill fire in Woonsocket, a power outage in Jamestown, or numerous house fires around the state. It's a testament to their dedication and preparation that we were able to respond effectively to all these crises at the same time. While the Red Cross of Rhode Island was responding to disasters, both natural and man-made, we were also teaching thousands of Rhode Island children to swim. At the same time, we are planning another big summer fundraiser at the Dunes Club in Narragansett to benefit our Urban Lifeguard Corps, a program that recently won a national award for diversity outreach. You can rest assured that as you read this newsletter, there is a Rhode Islander somewhere who is being touched by the helping hand of the Red Cross.
