Essentially, the bike was bought new in 1983 by a friend of mine, and between
83 and 87 he put 4400 miles on it. He got married(for the second time) and
started a family(for the second time) and stopped riding it. Kept it in
his garage, but didn't take any 'storage' precautions(I'm sure he felt
like he was always 'about to get back to riding'), let the license lapse,
and generally ignored it.
