A glorious weekend here and I spend it all wrenching...and loving it.
PB99 is the bike I bought from Milt last year, the one that the engine
won't turn over and the one that has the coolant in the engine oil.
I've decided that I want to remove the engine and repair/replace it.
I'm continuing to follow the engine removal procedure from the clymer manual
and I get to the step that says: "Remove the alternator as described in
Chapter Seven". Turn to Ch. 7, read the instructions and come to
"Screw in the rotor puller until it stops. Use the Honda rotor puller
(p/n 07933-32900001) or K&N puller or equivalent" and then, in italics,
"CAUTION Don't try to remove the rotor without a puller".
I don't have a puller, so I make a mental note to consult the SabMag FAQ
and then order the honda part or whatever equivalent that makes the most
sense. I return to the engine removal procedure to see if there
are later steps that don't depend on the alternator being removed, and
I see "Remove the rear wheel". Ok, this is something I've done before,
let's do this. I turn to the chapter and start following the procedure.
It's going great until "4) Remove the rear axle self-locking nut." This
nut takes a 22mm socket, and my largest is 19mm. But I've done this
before with my 12" crescent wrench on PB97, so I decided to try it.
Man, that sucker was not moving. I take this as a sign that I need
to buy a 22mm socket, so I clean up and head to the hw store. I've got
both 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets, so I decide to splurge and buy the 22mm socket
in both sizes. And while I'm here, let's get a 22mm box-end wrench. And
hey, these are neat.....I stop myself and head straight to the check-out
before the damage is any worse.
When I get home, I try the box end wrench. No dice. I try the 3/8 ratchet
and 22mm socket. No dice. I add my 2 ft "pipe" extender. No dice, but the
ratchet breaks. Lovely. I decide to take a beverage break and reread
RoadDog's "screw/fastener faq". While I'm online I send a message to the
list and get several excellent suggestions. I'd already been trying
WD40, so next I'll try the 'breaker bar' and heat suggestion. Stay tuned.

A word about my projects. The main point is *not* to amass a huge stable
of V45s. The main point is for me to *learn*. And so far both projects
have been huge successes on that front. I was completely ignorant when
all this started. Now I'm only most ignorant. And mostly ignorant is
also "slightly wise", meaning there are a number of wrenching tasks
that I do not hesitate to tackle, and that number continues to go up.
