A peaceful abbey in the midst of the vast forest of Mossflower.  Inhabited by peace-loving mice, fiercely protective badgers, easy-going otters, industrious moles, and the ever-changing squirrels, is readying for its yearly feast under the Abbot Mortimer.

Halfway down the road, the vicious son-of-a-searat Cluny the Scourge rides wildly on a stolen horsecart.  So horrible are his misdeeds they are counted for fantasy to those who do not observe them.

So begins the mythic journey into REDWALL.

The pacific landscape is shattered, mice are hoping to surrender peacefully and not be killed, all save a few young ones, the Abbot, and Constance the Badger.

Cluny takes over St. Ninian's church, the home of John Churchmouse, as his camp.  He will take over Redwall!  Cluny's Castle!  Cluny is a military genius who has never surrendered or lost a fight.  He only has one eye from a fight with a wrathful pike and a long tail he can use as a whip, usually with a poisoned barb fastened on the end.

The only conceivable match for Cluny that the mice can think of is depicted on a tapestry that flutters in Great Hall.  Martin the Warrior.

Probably the most inconceivable match for Cluny is a young mouse who can't even walk ten steps without falling flat on his face: Matthias, whose eye is on young Cornflower the whole time and on a place in the Order of Redwall the other half.

But somehow Matthias is the one chosen to go and retrieve Martin's sword from wherever it may lie.  He embarks on the dangerous expedition with the help of an elderly monk, Methuselah, the Recorder of Redwall Abbey.  They find where Martin hid the sword... but it's not there anymore.

Cluny may be the criminal mastermind of his time... but he's little match for a dusty, far-gone hero of pacifist mice healers.  The cloaked sword-bearing mouse follows him through his dreams.
