The 100 Bands That Rocked The World
Number 67 : Babes In Toyland

Having previously played in Sugar Baby Doll with future L7 bassist Jennifer Finch and one Courtney Love, Kat Bjelland relocated to Minneapolis in 1987 with the express intention of forming a band who would break down barriers in the male-dominated music industry. After a single on SubPop and tours with Sonic Youth and Faith No More, Babes In Toyland were soon heralded as leaders of a new wave of female bands, a movement which was to be dubbed Riot Grrrl. More feminised hardcore than grunge the Babes released a series of ground breaking albums - their first, 1990's "Spanking Machine", was produced by Nirvana knob twiddler Jack Endino - which set the standard for the influx of female-based bands which was to follow.
