| When I first heard Such Great Heights I remember thinking, What the hell am I listening to? It was some kind of electronic/indie song but the music grew onto me immediately, and a day rarely goes by where Im not listening to The Postal Service. The band is made up of Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab For Cutie), Jimmy Tamborello (of Dntel), and some harmonizing by Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley). Tamborello has put together wonderful electronic pieces (some reminiscent of old video games) and Gibbard lays down some beautiful vocals. I'm particularly happy with how well I find the lyrics to be. The not-so-sad songs about love avoid cliches and being over-sympathetic... the lyrics are just very well written. |
| Give Up is very well rounded, and I love the entire album (with the exception of one or two songs that are just "ok"). However a few particularly standout songs are Such Great Heights, The District Sleeps Alone Tonight, We Will Become Silhouettes, and of course my absolute favorite, Nothing Better, which features both Gibbards and Lewis singing. On several tracks Lewis harmonizes with Gibbard, but "Nothing Better" features a back-and-forth between the two singers, and the end result is a very beautiful song. 9 out of 10 - Jay |
