Part Nine by Ashley Z and Rinny
Joey sat at the head of the table, the skirt of her wedding dress spread around
her in the reception hall. A piece of half eaten wedding cake sat in front of
her, her appetite nearly non-existent as she watched Pacey on the dance floor.
He held the flower girl, his niece Rebecca, in his arms, dancing her through the
other scattered couples. Joey chuckled quietly to herself as he dipped the
little girl almost to the floor, her high pitched giggles drifting through the
room.
Jen moved to sit beside Joey and smiled at her,
"Congratulations."
"Thanks," Joey flushed faintly, having been caught
staring at her husband. She poked at the cake with her fork, "It went well,
didn't it?"
Jen smirked, "Yeah. Very well. You know, the whole crying
thing probably made it more believable to everyone else," she said as she looked
out at the dance floor at Pacey.
"What crying thing? There was no
crying." Joey shook her head, "I didn't cry."
Jen rolled her eyes, "Oh
really? So your eyebrows were raining?"
"I wasn't crying."
"Yes
you were. Look, it's okay, you know? I mean, if you were, it's completely
understandable."
"Well, I wasn't. I've got no reason to cry while getting
married to Pacey." She shrugged a bare shoulder, "Nope, I was most certainly not
crying at all."
"I think I may go dance with my husband. You know, I
don't want to stand too close to you seeing as you might be struck dead by
lightening."
Joey stuck out her tongue, "I hope he steps on your
toes."
She shook her head, "He never has
before."
"Damn."
Pacey walked back to Joey and sat next to her,
breathing a little heavy, "That Rebecca, she's a handful." He noticed Joey's
look, "What's wrong?"
"Jen's being obnoxious, that's all." She leaned
against him, her head on his shoulder. "Be wary, I may be struck down by
lightning any minute now."
"Awww, aren't you two cute?" Jen smirked from
Joey's other side.
Pacey waved her away, "Go away. Leave her alone. It's
her wedding day and you are not allowed to pick on her."
"Yeah," Joey
pouted at her friend. "Be nice."
Jen smiled, "Fine. Fine."
"Go
dance with Mike," Joey nudged Jen away, "I want my husband to myself for a few
minutes."
Jen smiled, "Okay."
Pacey smirked, "What was that
about?"
"Nothing," She shook her head, "I just wanted her to go away for
awhile. She has these ideas about us..."
Pacey chuckled, "Doesn't
everyone." He looked at the dance floor, "Come on, let's dance."
She
laughed, "Are you kidding me? I remember what it's like to dance with
you."
He bit the inside of her mouth, "Dance with me or you don't get
your honeymoon surprise."
Her gaze slid down to the front of his
trousers. "That surprise better not be what I think it is."
He leered at
her, "You wish. Now get up and join me."
She rose with a very put upon
sigh, "Will our ribcages be touching?
He bit the inside of his mouth,
"Woman, I will drag you kicking and screaming to the dance floor if you don't
quit complaining."
"Keep your voice down, Pace." She grinned innocently
at him, "People will think you don't love me."
He took her hand, "Yeah
yeah yeah."
"We should have a song," she said contemplatively, as the
stepped onto the dance floor.
He smiled, "We should, shouldn't we." He
wrapped both arms around her waist, as her arms wrapped around his neck. "What
do you think our song should be," he asked as they slowly swayed to the
music.
"I'm not picky," she tilted her head to the side, "This one works
for me, since it's our first dance as a married couple."
"Nah, this song
is too cheesy for us."
She smirked, "You'd probably want something like
Hotel California."
He shook his head, "Not for our wedding song." He was
quiet, "What about 'Turn My Head' by Live? I always loved that
song."
"How does it go?"
He started thinking, "You know, it really
doesn't apply. It's more of an 'angry' song."
"Hmm," she toyed with the
hairs at the nape of his neck absently, "What about Beloved Wife by Natalie
Merchant?" She suggested. "It's actually kinda depressing, never
mind."
He sighed, "Hmmm, what about..." he closed his eyes, "you have to
stop doing that."
"Doing what?" She arched a confused
eyebrow.
"The fingers...my neck. Stop."
"Oh," her eyes flashed
with hurt, but it was gone so quickly he thought maybe he imagined it.
"Sorry."
"No...I mean...it's not that it was bothering me. It was...it
was just hard for me to think with you doing that."
She nodded, "I
understand."
"So, can you think of any songs?"
"Ready for Love,"
she admitted. "I can't seem to get it out of my head lately."
He furrowed
his brow, "I don't think I know that song."
"It's by India Arie," she
frowned when he continued to give her a blank look. "It goes, I am ready for
love, why are you hiding from me," she sang softly. "I'd quickly give my freedom
to be held in your captivity. I am ready for love...all of the joy and the
pain..."
He cleared his throat, "Sounds beautiful. But...isn't that a
little too romantic for our...situation?"
She avoided his eyes, "It's all
I could think of. And generally when a couple chooses a song, it's a romantic
one."
He nodded, "Yeah...I suppose. I'm not saying it's a bad song...but,
you know..." he paused when the music changed and he looked over at the DJ and
saw Jen smiling with her arms folded over her chest, "Remind me to kill
Jen."
Joey's eyes fell closed as the music washed over her. "Are you sure
we can't just get a whole new set of friends?"
He brushed his lips over
the top of her ear, "This is a good song. And as for the new friends...I'm all
for it if you are."
She couldn't suppress a shiver. "I think she's been
reading too many romance novels lately," she murmured, resting her head against
his shoulder.
He nuzzled her head with his nose, "But maybe everyone else
thinks this song is appropriate for us."
"Oh, I'm sure they do," she
looked over his shoulder to see several of their guests watching them. Turning
her head, she settled it on his shoulder so that her face was against his neck,
her warm breath cascading over the skin. "They're watching us," she
whispered.
"They who?" he asked as he closed his eyes. He moved his hands
over her back, feeling her shiver slightly in his arms.
"Family.
Friends," she answered softly, her lashes fluttering against his
neck.
"Mmm, are they still here?"
"Who?" she
whispered.
Jack sidled up to Jen, with a smirk. "Still think
it'll take 'em six months?"
Jen smirked, "No. I'm thinking they won't
last the night now."
"I don't think they'll make it out of the church."
He held out a hand to her, "May I have this dance?"
She gave a simple
nod, "Yes you may."
He led her to the dance floor, eyeing Pacey and Joey
as he pulled Jen into his arms. "Why did they break up again?"
Jen shook
her head, "I don't think they remember why they broke up, you expect me
to?"
He smiled, "Great song choice, by the way."
She smiled
innocently, "Why, whatever do you
mean?"
When love is truly right It
lives from year to year It changes as it goes And on the way it
grows But it never disappears
After all these stops and starts We
keep coming back to these two hearts Two angels who've been rescued from the
fall And after all that we've been through It all comes down to me and
you I guess it's meant to be Forever you and me After all
Always
just beyond my touch You know I needed you so much After all, what else is
living for?
After all that stops and starts We keep coming back to
these two hearts Two angels who've rescued from the fall And after all
that we've been through It all comes down to me and you I guess it's meant
to be Forever you and me After all
