Part Five by Ashley Z and Rinny
"About time you two showed up," Jen smiled up at Jack as he and Pacey entered
the small bistro. "We've been waiting hours," she lamented.
"If by hours
you mean two minutes." Jack replied, "We saw you walk in when we were
parking."
Pacey smiled, "Nice try though, Lindley."
Joey smiled,
"So, what have you two been up to?"
Pacey sat next to her,
"Stuff."
"That stuff better not have involved spending lots of money,"
she frowned at him.
"Define lots. You know that word has several meanings
to me."
"Pacey," she sighed. "How much did you
spend?"
"Enough."
"Jack?" She turned pleading brown eyes to her
other best friend.
Jack looked at Pacey, then back at Joey, "Sorry, as
the best man, I'm not allowed to spill."
"I have ways, McPhee." Joey said
threateningly.
He shook his head, "Sorry, Joey. I can't tell
you."
She turned and glared at Pacey, "I'm going to be in debt to you for
the rest of my life, aren't I?"
He rolled his eyes, "No. Stop worrying so
much. It's getting annoying."
She sighed and sat back in her chair,
"You're mean. I don't think I want to marry you anymore."
He smiled,
"Okay. Let's call the whole thing off then."
Joey fluttered her eyes at
Jack, "Jackers, will you be my new husband?"
Jack shook his head, "Nope.
Landon would kill me."
Tilting her head, Joey regarded Jen. "Could I
borrow your hubby for a while?"
Jen shook her head, "No. He's
mine."
She gave a dramatic sigh, "I guess I'm stuck with you,
Pace."
He grinned, "Guess so. Which means you have to stop asking me how
much money I spent. It's my money which means I can spend it on you or whatever
any time I want."
She bit her lip, "It's a deal. But I'm a natural tight
wad, you're just going to have to accept that."
"Fine. Then you have to
accept that I like to spend the money I have."
"I can do that." She
nodded her head, "Maybe."
Pacey nodded, then looked at his menu, "Now,
what do we want to eat."
The waitress came and took their order soon
after that, and delivered their drinks moments later. "So," Jen smiled across
the table at Pacey. "Did you guys get your tuxes?"
Pacey nodded, "And I
must say I look damn sexy in mine."
"No surprise there," Joey said. "We
found a dress for me, and I just need to get Jen's bridesmaid dress and your
ring."
Pacey smiled, "I also got your ring."
Joey forced herself
not to ask about the price, "That's good. What kind of ring do you
want?"
He shrugged, "Whatever you get will be fine. I trust your
judgment."
"Well, you're only going to be wearing it half the time, I
don't want to get one that you'll lose."
"I'll only be wearing it half
the time? I'm confused."
She rolled her eyes, "You can't wear it while
you're on a date. How would that look?"
"Joey, let me worry about my
personal life, okay?"
"As long as you continue to have one, I'll leave ya
alone." She took a sip of her water.
He rolled his eyes, "You are the
most irritating woman."
"And you are the most irritating man."
"I
know. But you could..." he shook his head, "just let me do what I want, okay?
Stop worrying about me."
"That's what a wife is for."
Jack leaned
over to Jen and whispered behind his hand as the other two continued to argue.
"Is this one of those lover's spats?"
Jen smiled, "I think so."
"I
thought they had to be lovers first?" He hissed back.
Jen smirked and
whispered to him, "Give them time. They'll work on that part without any help
from anyone."
"Don't tell me you didn't spend the afternoon planting
little seeds of possibilities in her mind." Jack scoffed.
Jen shook her
head, "I said nothing that she hadn't thought of herself." She looked at Jack as
Joey and Pacey remain oblivious to them, "But I bet you planted little thoughts
in Pacey's head, didn't you?"
"Maybe one or two." He smiled
innocently.
Jen smirked, "I give them six months, what about
you?"
"Three."
"You think that soon?" Jen asked with a small
smile.
"Oh, yeah. I wouldn't be entirely shocked if they don't make it
past the wedding night."
Jen smiled, "Speaking of the wedding night. What
does Pacey have planned for her?"
"I'm not at liberty to say." Jack shook
his head.
"So he does have something planned, huh?"
"You're evil,
you know that?" He shook his head with a chuckle, "You're why I don't date
women."
She smiled, "No, the reason you don't date women is because
you're smart."
"That's the truth." He glanced over at Pacey and Joey who
were continuing to argue. "You two gonna cool it? Food's here." He gestured as
the waitress approaching them.
Pacey shook his head, and looked at Jack,
"I'm done arguing."
"We weren't arguing. We were adamantly discussing."
Joey clarified, sitting back with a half smile.
Pacey sighed, "You say
potatoe..."
"How are you two ever going to convince anyone you're in
love?" Jen rolled her eyes as she speared a piece of lettuce.
Pacey
shrugged, "I think if we can convince a pastor, we could convince
anyone."
"Yeah, for half an hour maybe," Jack scoffed.
"Please,
it's not that hard." Joey replied, smiling over at Pacey. "Right,
Pookie?"
"Right, Muffin."
"Okay, that's just
sickening."
Pacey rolled his eyes, "Shut up, Jackers."
Jack dug
into his club sandwich with a grin. Jen smiled, "I think we made our
point."
"What point would that be?"
"I think they believe we can't
pull off being blissfully in love." Joey clarified.
"Uh huh," Jack nodded
with his mouthful. Once he swallowed, he continued. "You two haven't even
touched each other since we got here."
Pacey looked up from the bite he
was about to take, then at Joey, "We're supposed to touch each other? Where was
I when the memo was sent out, and what exactly is it I can touch?" he asked
leering at her.
"We're not trying to act in love right now." Joey
protested, to Jack and then turned to Pacey. "You can touch anything not covered
by a swimsuit."
Pacey smiled, "Then there's really no
point."
"Precisely." Joey nodded.
"Although...now that I think
about it...if it's a string bikini. I could still do some pretty serious
damage," he said with a smirk. Joey rolled her eyes and took a bite of her
sandwich, trying not to think what kind of damage he was capable of.
Jen
smirked, "You two are either going to kill each other or..."
"Or what
Jen?" Jack asked innocently.
She smiled sweetly,
"Or...nothing."
Joey shot her friend a glare. "Nothing is
right."
Jen continued to smile as Pacey looked at the two women and
sighed, "What am I missing?"
"She thinks we're going to sleep together."
Joey said after a moment, realizing it would be better to get it out in the
open.
Pacey smirked, "So does Jack."
"So then they're equally
delusional. How nice."
Jack shook his head and whispered under his
breath, "Pot calling the kettle black." Jen snickered and he noticed the looks
from both Joey and Pacey, "Look, we're just...a little more
objective."
"I think you both just want everyone to be as blissfully
happy as you are," Joey said with a shake of her head.
Jack smiled, "I am
blissfully happy, aren't I?"
"Sickeningly so, at times." Jen
replied.
"Hypocrite," Joey coughed.
Pacey laughed, "How very
true."
"And moving on to other topics..." Joey smiled. "Bessie and family
are coming in three days. Mostly to help out before the ceremony. She has it in
her head to handle the reception herself. I can fit them all in my house, but I
don't know what we're going to do with your family, Pace."
He shook his
head, "They are not staying with me."
"You'd make them stay in a
hotel?"
"Instead of stay with me and drive me crazy? In a
heartbeat."
She rolled her eyes, "I might be able to squeeze them in my
place. If I put Bessie and Bodie in my room, your parents in the guest room,
Alex could sleep on a cot in the study." She tilted her head in thought. "Doug
could sleep on the couch in the living room. And one of your sisters and her
husband can sleep on the pull out couch in the den."
Pacey shook his
head, "You are not taking in my family. I like you too much to subject you to
that. They are staying in a hotel and that's the end of it."
"I don't
want them to think badly of me. I mean, I've already got my last name working
against me. I want your family to like me."
He sighed, "They do. You were
the only girlfriend of mine they actually liked. My mom still asks about you.
Believe me, they are better off at a hotel."
"Can I at least let Doug
stay?"
Pacey shook his head, "If you end up taking one, you'll have to
take them all. I just thought of something, where are you going to sleep if you
give Bessie and Bodie your room?"
"Um...your place?"
Pacey sighed,
"Okay, but if you pull the blankets off of me, I'll hurt you," he said with a
knowing smile. He was waiting for her reply to that.
"If I...?" Her eyes
widened and she hit him in the arm. "I am not sharing a bed with
you."
"Where the hell are you going to sleep then?"
"I'll sleep in
the bed. You sleep on
the couch."
"Nope. My apartment. You share the bed or you're on the
couch."
"I'll take the couch, thank you very much." She took a sip of her
drink. "I refuse sleep on the same mattress as several hundred other naked women
have."
"Hey...not several hundred. Less than that."
"I'm sure,"
She rolled her eyes.
"Jealous, Jo?" Jen arched an
eyebrow.
"Hardly. What's to be jealous of?" She said with a
smile.
Pacey smiled, "All the women who have had me...oh...wait...didn't
you once have the pleasure? I believe you did."
"Yeah, but it's funny,"
she tilted her head, a fake look of concentration on her face, "I don't remember
any pleasure."
Pacey nodded and took a bite of his sandwich, "Yes you do.
Don't kid yourself."
"It's all so hazy," she frowned, "You must not have
been very memorable."
Pacey smirked, "Again, quit kidding yourself.
Besides, I don't need you to tell me I'm good. You told Audrey and she told me,"
he said breaking into a grin.
She groaned, "Why did I ever tell that
woman anything?"
Pacey shrugged and looked at Jack and Jen, "She's not a
very good liar. And Audrey," he said turning to Joey, "told me all kinds of
things, Potter."
"Dare we ask?" Jen asked, leaning forward
conspiratorially.
Pacey shook his head, "I wouldn't if I were
you."
"I'm curious," Jack threw in.
"No, you're not." Joey
protested.
Pacey sighed, "Nope. Joey would kill me over some of this
stuff."
"What stuff?" Joey frowned at him, "She couldn't have told you
anything too bad."
Pacey smirked, "You'd be surprised."
"Tell
us!"
"No. I was sworn to secrecy. Besides, I'm sure Audrey told Joey
things...that need not be known to the general public."
"No, not really."
Joey gave him a speculative look.
Pacey shrugged, "Well, anyway, this is
really good," he said pointing to the sandwich.
Jack laughed, "So,
Pacey's got dirt on Joey."
Pacey smiled, "I've got dirt on everybody. And
that means both of you."
"Why are we friends with him again?" Jen asked,
pointing her thumb at Pacey.
"Because I'm cute."
"He's like an
annoying puppy dog. You keep kicking, but he just keeps coming back." Joey took
another bite of her sandwich.
"Just remember one thing, Jo. There is no one I love to annoy
more than you."
"As if you'd let me forget."
Jack smiled, "I feel
sorry for this kid when it lives with you."
"We'll be long divorced
before the baby's old enough to even take notice of our banter." Joey shook her
head. "Then I'll just have to teach him or her to ignore Pacey after
that."
"There is no ignoring me. I'm too adorable," he said
grinning.
She groaned, "Like an annoying puppy, I swear."
