Part Thirty-six by Ashley Z and Rinny
Pacey opened the front door and looked around the house as the all the lights
were off and a few candles were lit. He sighed, "Joey?" he called as he walked
into the living room.
"Hey," she smiled shakily at him as she came into
the living room. She wore a simple black dress that came down to her knees. It
wasn't particularly revealing and all the more sexy because of it. "What took
you so long?"
He eyed her with a soft, sad smile, "I was helping out at
the restaurant."
"You've been working hard," Joey came up and gave him a
kiss. When he didn't respond, she pulled back with confusion in her
eyes.
"What's...all this for?"
"I'd just thought...I wanted it to
be romantic," she stepped away from him, her eyes down cast. "I guess it's more
cheesy than anything else."
He smiled, "It's romantic, not
cheesy."
She moved to the coffee table where several of the candles were
burning, filling the room with the honeyed scent of vanilla. "I have something I
need to give you," she picked up a packet of papers.
He took a deep
breath, "Like...a present? Is it a watch? Cause I really need a
watch."
She smiled, "No, not a watch." Walking back over to him, she
handed him the papers. "I got the divorce. I've already signed everything, now
it's your turn."
He looked at the papers then at her, "I need a drink,"
he said leaving her and walking into the kitchen.
She sighed and followed
after him, grabbing a pen as she went. "Are you going to be okay?"
"Yeah,
fine. Just thirsty."
"Okay, well, when you finish," she put the pen
beside the papers. "Sign. I marked where your signature needs to be."
He
pulled a bottle from the refrigerator and opened the beer. He stared at the
papers as he took a gulp of the drink, "So, when I sign these, when do you want
me gone?"
"We can talk about that later."
"No, let's talk about it
now. I need to know how much time I have to find an apartment."
"Well..."
she shifted her weight uneasily. "The twelve months aren't up yet. So until our
anniversary, at least."
"Oh...good day to do that then." He walked over
to where she'd laid the papers, opened them and signed his name to the dotted
line. "Done. Marriage over."
"Good," Joey nodded, and took the papers,
putting them on the kitchen table.
He walked out of the kitchen and set
his beer on one of the end tables beside the couch, "I'm going to take a
shower."
"No, you're not," Joey shook her head and caught his hand,
pulling him back into the living room.
"I'm not? Joey I'm hot and sweaty
from helping out at the restaurant today, I need a shower."
"I need to do
something first," she bit her lip, her eyes pleading with him.
He sighed,
unable to resist that look. "Okay. What?"
Taking a deep breath, she liked
her lips and sank down to one knee in front of him, the golden light from the
candles reflected in her eyes.
He looked down at her, "What are you
doing?"
"I'm..." her voice cracked. "I'm proposing." She sniffed and
wiped at her eyes with her free hand. "I swore I wasn't going to
cry..."
He smiled, "Joey, stand up."
"No," she shook her head. "I
need to do this. You need me to do this."
"Joey..." he sat on the couch
as she still held onto his hand, "Why..."
She swallowed thickly and gazed
up at him. "I love you. And the thought that I might lose you scared me out of
my mind. After I signed the papers...I read through them. Over and over again,
and I realized...no matter how much you said you loved me or how much you swore
that you'd do whatever it took to be with me, you were going to get tired of me
holding you at arms length and I'd lose you anyway."
"If...then why have
me sign them in the first place? Why didn't you just rip them up and never say
another thing about them?"
"I love you and I want to have a real wedding,
Pacey. And a real honeymoon." She bit her lip, "I want us to be married because
we love each other and not because I want something out of it. Pacey, will you
be my husband?"
He smiled, "Oh yeah."
Grinning through her tears,
she launched herself onto his lap, wrapping him tightly in her arms. "I love you
so much."
He brought her lips to his as he cupped her face. He kissed her
thoroughly, "I love you more than anything."
"I'm sorry I made you wait,"
she whispered.
He shook his head, "It's--you were worth the
wait."
"I don't believe I was." She kissed his jaw, "But I'm glad you
did."
He kissed the spot below her ear, "Me too."
Her eyes fell
closed and she sighed, "Is this what a happy ending feels like?"
He shook
his head, "Your guess is as good as mine."
"Take me to bed, Pace." She
murmured.
He removed her from his lap and stood, he pulled her behind him
to the bedroom, "Don't have to tell me twice."
