Vernon L Irvin (born 1962) is Chief Marketing Officer for XM Satellite Radio.

He previously held positions at MCI (where he was key in creating the "Friends & Family" package); and latterly VeriSign, where he became known as the "Ringtone Czar" for creating Jamster and doubling the revenues of the corporation in his two year tenure.

Irvin is currently the highest ranking African American executive in the technology industry.

Born in the Braddock suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of three children of a US Steel worker and a beauty care lecturer, Irvin attended Swissvale High (now St. Anselm's) Catholic school[1]. A talented American footballer and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, after trying out for a football scholarship in California, Irvin gained a place at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio on a football scholarship. Irvin progressed from MCI sales into their marketing team, where he was part of the group that created "Friends & Family" as an economic way of driving revenues to MCI's relatively unknown network against AT&T. He then moved back to Ameritech before a brief stint WorldCom, where he rejected Bernie Ebbers offer of employment, saying: "Bernie, I can't move down there. The only jobs black people have down there are in the Florida orange juice factory or helping people with their luggage. "[3]
