Calcium is the most abundant metal in the majority of animals. When combined with Phosphorous it solidifies into what we know as bone. A key element in making this happen is Vitamin D.
Calcium is needed for the proper digestion and absorption of Phosphorous. Many insects and other foods we feed are very low in calcium and high in phosphorous. For this reason Calcium is the primary ingredient in most reptile supplements.
A good calcium to Phosphorous ratio is 1:1. There is speculation that it should be as high as 2:1. However, there is danger in having too much calcium in the body as well.
