Last Ten Movies I Saw (starting with the most recent):

The Stepford Wives (2004)
Starring Matthew Broderick as Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler as Bette Midler, Christopher Walken as Christopher Walken, and Jon Lovitz as Jon Lovitz.  Also starring Nicole Kidman as OK.  This movie is said to have undergone numerous rewrites and re-edits, and it shows.  Mildly funny, mostly predictable.  2.5 out of 5




The Final Countdown (1980)
This is not, as one might expect, a feature-length music video for the song by Europe.  It is in fact an aircraft-carrier-travels-back-in-time movie starring Martin Sheen and Kirk Douglas.  Bet you didn't know Martin Sheen and Kirk Douglas did an aircraft-carrier-travels-back-in-time movie, did you?  This film has a cool fighter jet dog fight scene, but not much else.  2.5 out of 5




Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Is Michael Moore biased?  Of course.  Does he draw conclusions not entirely based on fact?  Yes.  Does he go overboard with his accusations?  Sometimes.  But on the whole, Moore presents a hell of a case for voting George W. Bush and his pals out of office in November.  If you're looking for "Fair and Balanced," you won't find it here any more than you'll find it on the network that uses that slogan.  If, however, you want to see how the war in Iraq has affected ordinary people both here and in the country we occupy, pay special attention to the second half of this film.  4 out of 5




The Terminal (2004)
A decent movie, and one that I would recommend.  There are quite a few Spielbergian moments when things work out a little too nicely and/or are a little too sappy, but overall...4 out of 5




Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders (1996)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 style.  I have this one on DVD and decided to watch it because I was bored. The jokes in this one are pretty funny even after seeing it several times before. Ernest Borgnine recounts to his grandson the script for a movie that he apparently never sold, and it's kind of obvious why he didn't.  MST3Kized...4 out of 5




Urban Legend (1998)
One of those crappy scary movies spawned by the Scream trend of the late 90s.  Not scary and predictable.  The one redeeming quality of most movies of this type is that the way people die is so absurd that you sometimes have to laugh (even if you know it's extremely wrong).  This movie didn't even have that, which is unfortunate.  They really could have had a lot more fun with the whole urban legend thing, but it didn't happen.  1.5 out of 5




Jeepers Creepers (2001)
There's a moment in this movie, when a young man is about to go down a mysterious pipe where something weird-looking may or may not have dumped a body, when the young woman with him says, "You know, in scary movies, when someone does something really stupid, and everyone hates them for it?  Well, this is it!"  You see, it's funny because this is a scary movie, and that was the moment when he was doing something really stupid.  Ha ha!  And she was right...I really hated them.  1.5 out of 5




Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
You try not to expect much out of movie like this.  That way, when you go to see it, you're pleasantly surprised.  Mission accomplished.  (By the way, I was awesome at dodgeball when I was a kid.  Anybody wanna play?  Seriously...)  4 out of 5




Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
I didn't think I would like this movie.  I thought the second one was too much like the first, and I had thought the third would be more of the same.  But consistent with the buzz around Azkaban, it benefits greatly from the creative vision of a different director, Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien).  (Sorry, I know I'm missing accent marks in the Spanish there, but I don't know how to put them there.)  I think this is, without a doubt, the best of the Potter films so far.  I strongly recommend it.  Unfortunately, it may be necessary to watch one or even both of the previous films just to get a handle on the characters and the lingo.  4 out of 5




Scary Movie 3 (2003)
Yeah, see the black guy in the poster?  Makes you think of the Wayans brothers, right?  Because they were in the first two movies of this franchise.  Yeah, they aren't in this one.  And while that's not all bad, it's not all great, either.  Spoof movie veterans Charlie Sheen and Leslie Nielsen are about the only funny things in this film, but even they aren't at 100% here.  3 out of 5
