• 2.27.05, 3:02pm - Oscar Predictions:  DISCLAIMER:  I usually don't have much of a basis for making Oscar predictions because I don't see many of the nominated movies.  This year is no exception.  Of 54 movies nominated in 24 categories, I've only seen 12 films in 17 categories.  I'm only making predictions in categories that include at least one movie that I have seen.  Of those, however, 9 of the "predictions" are for movies I haven't seen.  You may be asking, "Dustin, why do you even bother making Oscar predictions?"  My answer is, "I have no idea."  So here we go...

- Actor:  Jamie Foxx in Ray (but I thought Don Cheadle was great in Hotel Rwanda)

- Supporting Actor:  Thomas Haden Church in Sideways

- Actress:  I've only seen Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but my guess is Hilary Swank will win for Million Dollar Baby.

- Supporting Actress:  Cate Blanchett for The Aviator, although I haven't seen it.

- Costume Design:  I've only seen Ray, but I can't believe it would win in this category.  Best guess: The Aviator

- Original Score:
The music in The Village was a big part of that film, but I don't think it will win.  The only other one I saw was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but I can't imagine that one winning either.  Complete guess: Finding Neverland

- Original Song:  I don't even know why this is a category.  Who knows these songs?  I've seen Shrek 2, but I can't remember the nominated song.  I'm not even guessing on this one.

- Sound Editing:  Spider-Man 2

- Sound Mixing:  I don't even know the difference between this category and the previous one, but for some reason they never seem to go to the same movie.  So, I'll say The Aviator.

- Visual Effects:  The only category in which I've seen every movie nominated (alas, there are only three).  I'll go with Spider-Man 2.

- Adapted Screenplay:  Sideways

- Original Screenplay:  I'm happy to see that The Incredibles was nominated, but it'll probably go to The Aviator.

- Editing:  I've seen three out five, but I'm still going with one I haven't seen: The Aviator

- Animated Feature: The Incredibles

- Documentary Feature:  The only one I've seen is Super Size Me.  I don't think it will win, but I wouldn't know what to guess, so I'll make it my "official" prediction.  (What have I got to lose?)

- Director:  It seems like it may finally be Martin Scorsese's year, even though The Aviator probably hasn't been one of his best films.

- Picture:  Probably The Aviator, although I'd like to see it go to Sideways.
