At times I find the Republican media's insistence on treating military spending as completely different as unnerving. It's almost as if Republicans fervently believe that military spending is not paid for by tax dollars but paid instead by magic. How else can one explain -with a straight face, that is - how someone can argue for less spending while maintaining an insatiable appetite for weaponry and interventionism. Whose money pays for this largesse anyway?

The only logical explanation for this attitude is that they believe in the existence of a military spending fairies who will actually pay for our military spending excesses - if enough people believe in them. Whenever I see a bunch of Republican political activists giving a standing ovation I can't help wonder if there is someone in the background chanting: "Clap, if you believe in fairies!" Of course, the only logical explanation available: we have these huge deficits only because there just aren't enough people in this country who really believe in the power of military spending fairies! Somehow, belief in magic has declined in this country, relegated only to Republican activists, newspaper and magazine editors, Ross Perot, the Concord Coalition and these so called "taxpayer" associations - who also harbor an unshakeable belief in the prison fairies. Another election came and went without Republicans calling for a mandate on military spending fairies. Without such a declaration of public support, how can we reasonably expect them to balance the budget for us?
