Our favorite chicken little, Caspar [War Toys ® US] Weinberger is now warning us of the danger posed by possible Russian control over Caspian Sea crude. So we're about to go to war for oil - again. Didn't we learn anything from Desert Storm? What about the long lines from the oil embargoes in the 70s? Why are we still so dependent on foreign sources of oil for our energy supplies? We broke the first oil embargo with a well led program of energy conservation and development of alternative energy sources led on the US front by the much maligned Jimmy Carter. Caspar spent the next 6 years with the much beloved Ronald Reagan [aka The Great Prevaricator] systematically undoing Carter's efforts at promoting conservation and energy alternatives. I suppose he enjoys sending troops to fight for oil.

Caspar also was key in undoing another of Jimmy's accomplishments - reducing our arms sales abroad - especially to autocracies. He didn't think it wise for taxpayers to subsidize development of alternative energy sources to reduce the risk of war. On the other hand he has absolutely no problem subsidizing development of weaponry - often sold to hostile or potentially hostile regimes - which increase the risk of war. Most of the well armed countries of the world have us to thank, either directly for arms or for providing impetus to arm with our severely dysfunctional foreign policy. Sounds megastupid to me! Now he works for Forbes magazine; now I know why I never trusted Steve.
