Cardcaptor Rika

Note: I wrote this one just for fun…! Some of the cards I used are not the ones from the anime or manga; they are ones I’ve made up in order for my story to work well. Enjoy!

“Goodbye, Tomoyo!” Rika said, placing her backpack over her shoulders and heading out of the home economics room. She was now in the fifth grade so Rika had more options for classes. She was in a home etc class with Tomoyo. The students had been assigned to make an old ballroom dress and Tomoyo’s partner was Rika.

“Bye-bye, Rika!” Tomoyo said, waving, as she finished putting the supplies in her backpack. Rika was about to leave when Tomoyo stopped her.

“Rika!” Tomoyo yelled, not so loud as to make a big scene.

Rika turned on her heal and smiled. “Yes Tomoyo, did you forget something?” she asked, walking back to her

.

“When should be get together to work on this project? Since it’s Friday we could get together tomorrow,” Tomoyo stated.

Rika agreed. “Why don’t you come over to my house? My mother got me a new sewing machine and we could try it out. Would noon be alright with you?”

Tomoyo nodded. “That would be just fine, Rika. I’ll meet you at your house at noon and we can start on our project. I’m going to meet Sakura here so you go on ahead today. Bye,” Tomoyo said, waving her on.

Rika left and went home. It had been raining, like it had been for the past three days. At first it was on and off but now it was hard to control the sewers and gardens and yards were getting too much water. With an umbrella in hand and her rain galoshes on, Rika dashed home.

She finished the simple math problems she’d received from class and read and answered the questions for her English class. When 8 came, Rika went upstairs to change for bed. Her mother came in a tucked her goodnight. Her mother looked very tired tonight. She was worn out from her job. She gave Rika a kiss on the cheek and then Rika could hear the door to her parents’ room shut. Rika got up. She went into her closet and changed.

Rika looked down at the dress she’d sewn herself. It was a beautiful piece that fit right for running at night in the rain. It was rainproof so she didn’t feel the thick droplets pelt her delicate skin. Very close fitted to her skin and coated in a warm thermal she was very toasty inside.

Rika had started by sewing a tight knit hat that fit over her head and ears and was a dark green color. The top she wore was a rubbery plastic that crinkled when she moved but was most comfortable. It was red had short sleeves fit to her arm. Under that was a long-sleeved green shirt. She wore the same rubber and plastic long green pants. Over the pants was a red, soft, trailing, warm pleated skirt that reached a couple of inches above her knees. She wore unseen warm socks and flat-footed red shoes with good grip.

Rika’s room was on the first floor so she opened the window and stepped outside. It was still raining. She walked to the park with the huge penguin slide. A pink flash flew by her she caught a glimpse of the thing that was causing so much rain. It was a cat-like creature: very short, a long tail, short ears, and whiskers. But what was peculiar was that it was an electric pink color and glowing blue eyes.

Rika, with her wand in hand, took off after it. She ran up the slide, under the monkey bars, through some trees and chased the cat until she couldn’t run anymore. Her breaths were coming in gasps and she put her hands on her sides and bent over to try and catch her breath.

“I’ve got to use a card,” she told herself, taking off her hat. Four cards fell from it and she caught them. Putting her hat back on she looked at them. Fly, Freeze, Light, and Bubble. She put two back in her hat and scanned the park for the animal. She saw it sitting on a tree. It’s eyes flashed towards her and she heard the rain start up again with extreme.

Rika winced as she felt the droplets pelt her body.

“Oww…!” she yelled, but she voice was lost in the rain.

She shook her head and watched for the pink animal. “There it is!” she noted, seeing it jump from tree to tree in the park. Rika tried to see a pattern in its movements but she couldn’t find one.

“Here I go,” she said, breathing on deeply. Rika ran off to the tree where the animal stood. It heard her running and took off around the park. Rika didn’t give up this time; she gritted her teeth and pumped her arms faster. She stopped suddenly and threw up a card into the air. She pulled her staff-like stick and called out, “Fly!” She sprouted a pair of small wings and took off into the air.

Her wings behind her pushed air behind her as she kept the animal in good sight. It seemed to be getting nervous seeing that Rika was behind it. Rika threw up another card in the air and shouted, “Form a net of bubbles to trap the animal; bubble!”

A small bubble net formed in front on the cat-like animal and it flew right into it, entangling itself in all the net. The bubble net was disappearing quickly so Rika pulled out a third card from her hat and threw it at the animal.

“Freeze!” she yelled, watching the area around her stop. The animal was frozen and Rika watching up to it. It was pretty cute when it wasn’t causing so much trouble. Rika noticed even the rain was frozen in place. She held up her staff and said, “Return to the guise you came from…. Rain!” and a card formed above the animal. She taped her staff on it and the animal turned to steam and filled up the card that read, “The Rain.”

Time resumed and Rika exhaled deeply. She smiled and put the card in her hat. She felt the rain grow lighter. It wasn’t coming in sheets anymore; it was gradually slowing until it came to a halt. The thunder roared no more and the lightening didn’t flash across the sky. The moon came out of its hiding spot and lit up the midnight sky. Exhausted, Rika started on the short walk home.

She crept into her house and into her room; she was careful not to wake her mother.

Something shook her. “Rika…. Wake up sweet heart,” her mother’s gentle voice said, waking Rika from her slumber. Rika blinked and sat straight up. “A dream… I had a dream…. Didn’t I?” she asked, herself, thinking.

“Good morning Rika. You said that Tomoyo was to come over here today at noon, right?” her mother’s voice interrupted her thoughts. She nodded and looked at the clock. It was 10:55; she had time to get ready.

Rika showered, dressed, had breakfast and brushed her teeth just in time to greet Tomoyoy at the door. She opened the door and welcoming her in. “Good day Tomoyo!” Rika said, gesturing her inside.

They settled down in Rika’s room with her new sewing machine on the floor beside them. Tomoyo had brought some beautiful fabrics to work with and pictures from magazines and books to work with. Rika drifted off to here dream again.

“It felt so real; it had to be reality. I remember everything so vividly,” she thought. The word ‘captor’ stuck in her head for some reason.

“Rika, are you tired? You are day dreaming,” Tomoyo asked, touching her shoulder. Rika shook her head. “No, Tomoyo. I had a very weird dream.”

Tomoyo replied, “They tell me about it.” Rika thought for a second and cleared her throat.

“It’s hard to explain. I was this… magical person, I think. Something like a…a captor? It was really rainy and I was at the penguin park. There was this cat like animal that was causing all the rain that had been happening. I sealed him up with this short staff and used these cards that held magical powers. One of them allowed me to fly, one allowed to be make nets, and another allowed to stop time. When I sealed the animal it created another card like the rest that read, ‘The Rain.’ It is a weird dream, isn’t it?” Rika asked, looking to Tomoyo.

Tomoyo had an unusual expression that Rika didn’t understand. But before Rika could ask her anything Tomoyo spoke to her.

“My goodness… what an extraordinary dream! I’ll have to tell Sakura about it,” she said. Rika craned her head to one side.

“Why would you tell Sakura?” she asked. Tomoyo didn’t reply but just smiled and said, “Lets get down to work, alright?”

Rika didn’t understand butt shrugged her shoulders. “Okay!”
