Bayern triumph over Boca

FC Bayern Mnchen added the world crown to their German and European titles on Tuesday as they overcame ten-man Club Atltico Boca Juniors 1-0 after extra time in the European/South American Cup in Tokyo.

Kuffour scores
Ghanaian defender Samuel Kuffour scored the decisive goal 20 minutes into the extra period, firing the ball home from close range after a Ciriaco Sforza corner had precipitated a goalmouth scramble. Thorsten Fink's header was blocked on the goalline by Boca defender Clemente Rodrguez and as players converged on the loose ball, Kuffour was in the right place to secure Bayern's second victory in this tournament, 25 years after their defeat of Brazil's Cruzeiro AC.

Delgado dismissed
It was a victory UEFA Champions League holders Bayern merited against Boca, holders of the Copa Libertadores, who beat Real Madrid CF in last year's edition and were seeking a hat-trick of successes. Following the dismissal moments before half-time of the Argentinian No11, Marcelo Delgado, for his vain attempt to win a penalty by diving, Boca sat back and sought to contain Bayern's pressure, seemingly happy to let the game progress to penalties.

Few chances
It was via shoot-outs that both sides won their respective continental titles and in a match of little attacking fluency - punctuated by nine yellow cards, including the two for Delgado - it seemed the crowd at Tokyo's National Stadium were set for more of the same. Missing injured playmaker Steffen Effenberg, Bayern created few chances in the 90 minutes of regulation time. In the first half, Giovane Elber flashed a shot wide of the far post. In the closing stages of the second, Claudio Pizarro was foiled by the foot of Boca goalkeeper Oscar Crdoba after a quickly taken free-kick from Sforza had put him through.

Jancker misses
Prior to Kuffour's goal, substitute Carsten Jancker missed Bayern's best openings of the extra period, blazing over the bar from ten metres when presented with a clear shooting chance and then heading over at the near post from a Willy Sagnol cross. Indeed it was the incursions down the flanks of Sagnol and his compatriot Bixente Lizarazu that provided the most recurring route to goal for Bayern.

Snatched attempt
Boca's approach was more dependent on flashes of inspiration from playmaker Juan Romn Riquelme and forward Guillermo Schelotto. The latter sent Delgado racing through on 28 minutes only for the alert Oliver Kahn to deny the striker with a sliding tackle just outside the penalty area. The same pair combined moments later and Delgado should have scored this time. Schelotto dispossessed Kuffour inside Bayern territory and his pass left Delgado with just Kahn to beat yet the striker snatched at his shot and the ball trickled wide.

Advantage Bayern
If that was bad, it got worse for Delgado on the stroke of half-time. Put through by a lovely Riquelme pass, he sought a penalty rather than trying to take the ball around Kahn and referee Kim Milton Nielsen showed him the red card. With that, the advantage passed to Bayern. Thanks to Kuffour, that advantage was not wasted. First Europe and now the world. The year 2001 has been kind to Bayern.
