14 titles in only four years
Lizarazu and his medal collection

Some professionals argue that it's better to retire at the pinnacle of your career. If that is the case, then Bixente Lizarazu should hang up his football boots right away. There is scarcely room for improvement to what is an outstanding career record.

Lizarazu must have had a number of mantelpiece extensions since joining Bayern Munich from Girondins Bordeaux in 1997. He has amassed 14 titles in the space of only four years including every major honour in the game and can now count himself as one of the world's most successful player still on active duty.

His first major international success was the World Cup win with the quipe tricolore in 1998. Two years later, France celebrated victory in the European Championship and, last summer, the Confederation Cup in Japan and South Korea. Most professionals dream about winning just one of these titles.

His record is no less impressive at club level. At Bayern Munich he has collected winner's medals in the Bundesliga (titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001), the DFB Cup (1998 and 2000), the DFB League Cup (successive titles between 1997 and 2000), the Champions League (victory over Valencia on 23 May 2001) and, most recently, the 2001 Toyota Cup (World Club Championship). He also has a runner's-up medal from his spell at Girondins Bordeaux (losing to Bayern Munich in 1996).

Very few players in the history of Bayern Munich come close to matching Lizarazu's achievements. You have to return to the all-conquering Bayern team of the Seventies (Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoene, Sepp Maier, Gerd Mller and Georg Schwarzenbeck) to find similar honours

Bayern will be delighted that the last thing on Lizarazu's mind is the end of such an illustrious career. His contract runs until 2003 and, having won the Toyota Cup, he now has his sights set on a fourth successive Bundesliga championship as well as the defence of the Champions League and World Cup crowns.
