Club Profile

Two distinguished and accomplished gentlemen are responsible for the birth of the Rotary Club of Pasig Sunrise. One is a young and dynamic medical practitioner who has achieved so much as a practicing physician. Now at the height of his success, he wants to share this rare gift of talent and deep feeling of concern with the less fortunate members of the community where he resides and practices his noble profession. The other fellow is a dedicated Rotarian who is now Past President of the Rotary Club of Monumento. Since President Fai is equally determined to expand and sustain his areas of rendering services, he accepted with great enthusiasm the request of Dr. Amando "Boy" Alfonso, Jr. to organize a Rotary Club in order for him and some other civic-oriented men and women of the community, to render much needed services to the poor and the needy.
The first meeting took place on March 1, 1997 at the Ciudad Fernandina, Greenhills, San Juan. In attendance were Pres. Fai, Dr. Boy Alfonso, Mar Bantoc, Brando Barrantes, and Charley Graza. To assist in the organization of the proposed club, PP and ADS Efren de Guzman of RC Marikina and Dr. Robert Chinjen were requested to attend the Saturday morning meetings. In the succeeding meetings more interested professionals came to join. Meanwhile, PP and Chairman District Extension, Romeo "Romy" P. Cabungcal also joined the meetings in order to provide more Rotary Information to the new recruits. The membership grew even more when the meeting place was transferred to the "Racks" at the Ortigas Center. It was there that Mike Amolat, Toto Yambao, John Reyes, Bullet Villareal, Ramon Bravo, Jimmy Luansing, Dennis Santiago, Ding Pozon, Boyette Coronel and Dan Santos joined the group. To bring the group even closer to the heart of the community, the group decided to move to the clubhouse of Ciudad Grande in Ortigas Avenue Ext. It was there and under the continued sponsorship of Pres. Fai that the required number of membership was achieved. At Ciudad Grande, Dick Manalo, Khing Borja, Ceazar Paradiang, Manny Villareal, Danny Naval, John Farias, Ricky Buenaventura, Rudy Robles, Ed Daguinol, Boy San Pedro, Lito Bagay, Nemy Miguel, Geo San Buenaventura and Ike Sanchez finally signed up.
While Pres. Fai was busy working on the Club's papers, the group (29 charter members) which is now fully complemented held its first formal meeting and election at the residence of Dr. Amando "Boy" Alfonso, Jr. As expected, the Doctor emerged as the Charter President. On May 07, 1997, the 60th club of District 3800 under the leadership of Gov. Marcelina "Lina" Aurelio was approved and chartered by Rotary International and aptly named: "ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG SUNRISE."
On its maiden years, the weekly meeting was transferred to the Silver Spur Diner whose location is convenient to the members of the club. During its first year, the club met the goals of the District with respect to the Four (4) Avenues and thus receiving the prestigious Presidential Citation from Rotary International. Then District Governor Santos "Santi" Chua personally handed the award to Charter President Boy Alfonso during the club induction ceremonies held August 13, 1998.
On its second year, the club through the leadership of Pres. Danilo "Danny" Santos and the untiring efforts of DGSR/Sec. Boyette Coronel organized a new rotary club, the Rotary Club of Mutya Ng Pasig. The new club was chartered on April 28, 1999 with Vice-Mayor Lorna Bernardo as the Charter President. The club also supported all the district affairs and was event tasked by District Governor Tony Co to host the District's 2nd Mass Induction of New Rotarians. This was a memorable year for the club, besides receiving the Presidential Citation from Rotary International, the club as also chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Rotary Club in the District.
As a young club, the Rotary Club of Pasig Sunrise had already made a difference. The personal and professional bond among members gets stronger every year. And it is through this foundation that the club will be able to face the different challenges in the coming years. The leadership of the club may change each year but the club's commitment to serve will always remain the same.
The 3rd president of the club was Manuel "Manny" Villareal who took his office on August 1999. However, due to debilitating disease, his term was abbreviated and only lasted up to November of the same year. The board decided to assign Vice-President Nemy Miguel and PE Robert Chinjen to take turn in managing the affairs of the club for the remainder of the year. The club accomplish many significant events as well as services. The district also acknowledged the talents of some of the club members by way of giving sensitive assignments like: the appointment of PP Dan Santos as Assistant Governor, the appointment of Charter Secretary Boyette Coronel to handle the District Governor's Cup Dart Team Competition for that year. It was also during the Rotary Year that the club participated in greater number to the Zone's presentation to the District Conference enabling the zone to receive an award. By and large, the club has shown solidarity and cooperation by performing successfully in various services in spite of the absence of an elected president.
On August 2000, Pres. Robert V. Chinjen took his office as the 4th President of the club and a new page in the club's history begin to unfold.
Under the leadership of Pres. Robert, the club vigorously implemented the plans and objectives set during the start of the Rotary year with the motto "Create Awareness, Take Action." The directors and committee heads implemented and monitored the activities of the club. As consequence, the club became more attuned to the district's goals and plans, more focused on the community-based projects of the club and thus encouraged more aspirants to be part of the club's membership. At the end of the Rotary year, the club was able to satisfy practically the requirements of the district as well as the Rotary International. The effort of the club throughout the year earned them the distinction of being awarded as one of the outstanding clubs of the district for RY 2000-2001, Rotary International Presidential Citation, the century challenge award and the leadership award from the district. Furthermore, the club remained solid and committed as the help of leadership is transferred to the new set of officers to be led by President Mauro "Ike" Sanchez.
