Club Profile

From the valley complex which is the gateway of Marikina, was born a Rotary Club with new breed of Rotarians, the Rotary Club of Marikina Hilltop, the creation of which was made possible by enterprising Rotarians of the Golden West.
So, on the warm sunny day of May 12, 1988, some 26 selected charter members opted to start the club. And with DGSR Fred Castro, PP Tony Arellano, CP Nanding Gose, Rtns. Obet de Leon, Greg Pacifico and Flor Bacay, in attendance the hilltoppers accepted the challenge and right at the stroke of noon, the new club was proclaimed. Charter President was Paquito Guanzon, an old Rotarian and an engineer; Vice President was Rod Dayoan, a former military man in security services; Meynard Carreon, a lawyer in government service, was chosen Charter Secretary; Treasurer was Rene Reside, a CPA in finance; Elmer Gamiao, in advertising, was PRO; and PR man Frank Clemente, the Sgt.-at-Arms.
With District Governor Tino Cacanindin in attendance, the new club was chartered, or rather "baptized", on Thursday afternoon 23 June 1988 at the Nativity of Our Lady Chapel at IVS, and fittingly so, for this was the birthplace of the club. Also, Hilltop owned the distinction at being the only club in the district with a priest as a charter member. Its birth was doubly significant is that the theme for that Rotary year was "Put Life in Rotary - Your Life." Truly, these new Rotarians accepted this theme of RI President Joyce Abbey and District Governor Ruf Luna.
Through the years, the continued dedication of the Charter Members and the infused enthusiasm of new members bore very fruitful and dynamic existence to the club. Various innovations were introduced on membership recruitment, club fellowship and fund raisings. You will note that the club continued the various community projects that endeared people in the community to Rotary such as: medical/dental, optical and nutrition. The club, through the years was honored and privileged to most various district programs, such as: livelihood, disaster preparedness, elderly and district 10-pin bowling tournament. In the zone, we hosted the successful paskuhan at awitan contest in coordination with other Marikina Rotary clubs and the City Government of Marikina. Prominent members of the club were appointed to various positions in the district. Various donations were done such as: school books, chairs and electric fans.
After the Charter President Kit Guanzon, the following presidents steward the club to its success in putting into practice Rotary's Motto "Service Above Self" and in a short period of time being known in our community as the "Doer Club". RY 89-90 Pres. Meynard Carreon; RY 90-91 Pres. Joey Cabungcal; RY 91- 92 Pres. Ross Ramos; RY 92-93 Pres. Elmer Gamiao; RY 93-94 Pres. Pepe Layug; RY 94-95 Pres. Godo Catarroja +; RY 95-96 Pres. Mel Romano; RY 96-97 Pres. Taddy Palma; RY 97-98 Pres. Rene Reside; RY 98-99 Pres. Cel Montalla; RY 99-2000 Pres. Benjie Catarroja; RY 00-01 Pres. Mar Betic; RY 01-02 Jimmy Santos.
The Rotary Club of Marikina Hilltop will still go a long way because of the continued vigorous and dynamic enthusiasm in this new millennium.
