Club Profile

Rotary's growth in this part of R.I. District 3800 was actually initiated by the RC Kalookan with the sponsorship of the RC Malabon, June 07, 1973. Three years later, in 1976, the Malabon Club established the Rotary Club of Navotas in the adjoining municipality of Navotas which in turn gave birth to the RCs of Northbay, Dagat Dagatan and Northbay East.
Ironically, from the time the Malabon club established up to 1986, a period of 13 years, the municipality of Malabon had only one rotary club. Several attempts were made to establish another club in the town as early as 1976 but all such efforts failed inspite of the prodding of several district governors because of the cautious stance of its members. Moreover, the majority of Malabon Rotarians firmly believe that it must create a group, which can be guaranteed to function effectively along the lofty ideals of service through the admission of quality members. It was not, however, until PP Eduardo "Edi" Chua Co Kiong became president of the Malabon club in RY 1981-1982 that enthusiasm to create another extension club in the town revived. A resolution to this effect was unanimously approved creating the Rotary Club of Malabon East during the last quarter of his term as president. And when PP Edi was appointed District Governor's Special Representative (DGSR) four years later in RY 1985-86, the new club was organized with the support of then club president Vicente Chua. Prior to this, DGSR Edi conducted a thorough survey of the eastern section of the town preparatory to relinquishing said territory to the new club in order to clearly define specific areas of responsibility and avoid future conflicts of interest. The reason for the choice of this section of town are the great potential to Rotary development that the area has in terms of population which is approximately 60,000 covering tow big subdivisions (Araneta Village and University Hills Subdivision), and because the sponsoring club has very little service activity in the area. To this end, CP Victor "Vic" E. Paez of the sponsor club assisted in setting up the territorial boundaries of the new club.
The first meeting of this newly formed organization was held on March 5, 1986, a week after the historic February revolution in the country. In attendance during this meeting was club officers of Malabon and a core group of prominent businessmen and professionals. They were composed of Engr. Rogelio L. Santiago, Mr. Jackson U. Malapas, Engr. John Co, Engr. Antonio Medrano and Mr. Abraham Go. From these handful of men, their number grew to 22 after only four weekly meetings with the help of Pres. Johnny dela Cruz of RC Metro San Francisco Del Monte, who resides in the Malabon sector of University Hills Subdivision.
To familiarize the would-be Rotarians in the intricacies of Rotary service, past presidents and other officers of Malabon such as PR Edwin Martinez, PP Otelo Villegas, PP Alberto Go, PP Antonio Ramos, PP Floro Banzon, PP Benito Lim, PP Juanito Gonzaga, Sr., IP Antonio Resurreccion, PVP Robert Leung, Dir. Efren Tan, Dir. William Chan, CM Ramos Paez, SAA Roy Dy Tak, Treas. Eugenio Uy, PRO Eusebio Dy, including Miguel Ampil of Pasig took turn in giving Rotary Information to the members.
Sec. Reynaldo Sanchez of the sponsor club acted as their club secretary while they were still in the stage of orientation. From these lively weekly sessions, the group gained insights into the fundamentals of Rotary and was introduced to the beauty of Rotary fellowship.
A month after their initial meeting on April 2, 1986, the new group was recognized by the district as a Provisional Rotary Club. Immediately, they proceeded into the serious business of drafting their club's constitution and by-laws under the guidance of Malabon's PP Florentino Santos. Following the ratification of these documents, they elected their first set of officers on April 9, 1986. In the said election, the following charter officers were elected: Rogelio L. Santiago, President; Nicanor Lazaro, Vice-president; John Co, President-Elect; Daniel Chua, Secretary; Dionisio Tan, Treasurer; Antonio Medrano, Sergeant-At-Arms; Antonio Legardo, PRO; Eduardo de Guzman, Auditor; and Abraham Go, Ernesto Abraham, Victorino Quimzon, Ernesto Chan and Benedicto Espiritu as Directors.
With the favorable recommendation of DGSR Edi Chua, the document for admission to Rotary International was duly approved by Governor Fernando Pedrosa and sent to Rotary International on April 22, 1986. Finally, the club was admitted to Rotary on August 5, 1986.
As a Provisional Rotary Club, Malabon East members had attended several district functions such as District Assembly '86, Discon '86 and other group and regional Rotary gatherings. It has successfully completed its first project, "Kapit-Bisig sa Sinalanta ng Baha", last September 6, 1986, providing food to hundreds of families affected by flood brought about by typhoon "Meding".
Inspired by the spirit of 1986 revolution, the club adopted as the name of the weekly bulletin, "KAPIT-BISIG".
