Club Profile

The Rotary Club of Malabon is an extension project of the Rotary Club of Kalookan - home club of R.I. Past President M. A. T. Caparas - launched during the term of late Past District Governor Marcos Herras of the original R.I. District 3800 (RY 1972-73). Through the initiative of then Mayor Maynardo R. Espiritu, Atty. Victor E. Paez of Malabon and Atty. Jaime Ilagan of Caloocan, the provisional Rotary Club of Malabon was organized in April 1973 with 25 charter members. It was officially admitted as member of Rotary International on June 7, 1973. Its officers headed by Atty. Vic Paez as charter president were formally elected the same month. The club meets every Friday night at the old Fish Fun Restaurant (now Pescadores) along Letre Road, Malabon.
As a young club, it launched an extensive Rotary information campaign within the club and conducted several service projects in the community. In its second year, it sponsored as host a district-wide forum on club service chaired by past president Alberto C. Go. Delegates from all Rotary clubs in Luzon, Bicol region, Mindoro and Palawan - the original territorial jurisdiction of D-380 attended this whole day affair. This was held at Fish Fun Restaurant with leading luminaries of Rotary in the district as resource speakers.
Early in its third year, it conducted an extensive survey of Malabon to identify a major problem area where it can serve better with its meager resources. As borne out by local and national statistics, it was finally decided that the club should deal in providing assistance to the victims of the leading causes of death in the country, chronic pulmonary diseases. This led to the birth of Malabon Rotary Clinic in February 6, 1978.
The Rotary Club of Malabon had established two Rotary clubs as its extension project: RC Navotas, chartered in 1977 and RC Malabon East, chartered in 1986.
As its commitment in pursuing Rotary's objective of promoting world understanding and peace, club members contributed a substantial amount to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International through the clubs Paul Harris Fellows and PH Sustaining Members. The club is currently associated with 4 foreign sisterclubs: RC Panchiao, Republic of China (D3490), RC Iwatsuki East, Japan (D2770), RC Daejeon West, Korea (D3680) and RC Bangrak, Bangkok (D3350). It has local sisterclubs: RC Downtown Manila (D3810), RC Santa Ana, Davao (D3860), RC University District, Manila (D3810) and recently, RC Loyola Heights (D3780).
During the term of past president Manuel A. Abad, the club granted the request of Catmon Public Elementary School to upgrade their school campus, which was under water during rainy seasons and high tide. Together with Sime Darby, Inc., we undertook the job of upgrading almost one (1) hectare of school ground with filling materials and constructing the perimeter wall of the school campus for the safety of students and to prevent neighboring squatter settlements from using the campus as garbage dumping site.
On its 25th year of service, the club decided to expand its community health services through the establishment of RCM-Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Center. RC Iwatsuki sponsored this project with the aid of Special Grant (SG7042) from The Rotary Foundation.
Among others, the following are some of the accomplishments the club has achieved: The first privately run charity clinic with X-ray, medical, dental and laboratory services, first NGO scholarship grants to deserving high school students enrolled at the Malabon Municipal High School; formulated the first comprehensive anti-drug abuse prevention and educational program in the municipality. To confront the problem of poverty, the club launched a pilot project for the benefit of their Rotary Village Corps members in 1988 with interest-free loans to be used in small livelihood investments only.
Other notable community development initiatives of the club were: spearheaded the organization of KASAMA, the confederation of all civic, business, professional, religious and academic sectors of Malabon; vaccination of dogs against rabies; donation of a dental chair for Bgy. Tonsuya; holding of annual career information and guidance counseling; organization of Interact and Rotaract clubs, free hospitalization for indigent patients; annual Christmas gift-giving for the handicapped.
The club had produced a District Governor, PDG Eduardo "Edi" N. Chua C.K., RY 1990-1991.
