Club Profile

Many Rotary clubs have been born under the awe-inspiring aegis of Rotary International's wheel, like all these clubs, Rotary club of Caloocan admitted into membership on September 12, 1959, thus becoming the 41st club of then District 385 and the first if not oldest of Metro Manila clubs of the present D-3800, has its own tale to tell.
Toward the end of 1958, District Governor Cornelio "Balmie" Balmaceda gave the initial spark that would lead to the organization of the club. He requested Past District Governor Emilio "Emy" Javier to make a thorough survey of the town of Kalookan, Rizal with the end in view of organizing a club in place. The perspective as laid down by the end of the year when feasibility of organizing it was confirmed.
In the early months of 1959, various information conferences with prominent residents of Kalookan were held by Governor Emy to gather information as to advisability of the planned Rotary Club of Kalookan is on the main highway with direct access to the progressive Rotary Club of Malolos under President "EV' Mendoza at the time. PDG Emy enlisted the Malolos club's help in the organization of the proposed Rotary Club of Caloocan. Kalookan used to form part of the territory of the Rotary Club of Manila so it was proposed that the club organized under the joint sponsorship of RC Manila and RC Malolos.
After several informal meetings all the prospective members composed of energetic, civic-minded professionals and businessmen met on June 17, 1959 at 4:00 p.m. at the dining hall of Jacks Restaurant to discuss matters regarding the organization of the proposed club and decided to hold amore formal gathering. It was at the home of Servillano "Servey" Batac, President of the Philippine Tiles Corporation. At noon of June 20, 1959, that the decision was made to finalize the club's organization. The meeting was presided over by President "EV" Mendoza of RC Malolos. To localize responsibility in the final stages of organization, a set of provisional officers were unanimously selected.
On June 25, 1959, another meeting was held at Barrio Fiesta with provisional president, Servey Batac, presiding. This meeting became an open forum wherein everybody was given the chance to ask questions especially on points where they had some doubts.
Finally, on 12 September 1959, RC Kalookan got its first batch of officers and members were officially inducted on September 30, 1959
Among the significant projects it has undertaken was the putting up of scholarship programs including Vocational training projects for poor but deserving students of Kalookan. It has also hosted several Rotary Exchange Scholar from Rotary International and looked after their stay in our country.
The Rotary Club of Kalookan has also helped fund the construction of artesian wells for some communities within the city, donated automatic traffic lights and billboards on road courtesy situated in strategic places in Kalookan to help in the smooth traffic flow along the main thoroughfares.
Another major community contribution was also responsible for the construction donation to the city of a fire station for the Kalookan Fire Department. The club was also responsible for the fencing of the Kalookan High School Campus, thereby greatly contributing in protecting students from outsiders. Beautification and cleanliness drives in various schools and in the community was also initiated.
A host of other civic-oriented projects were started by the past administrations that were later adopted and pursued by the incoming officers.
The Rotary Club of Kalookan has already produced one Rotary International President and three distinguished District Governor in the person of PRIP Armando "Mat" Caparas, PDG Ricardo "Ric" N. Chua T.B., and PDG Teodorico "Teddy" E. Zamora. There is no limit to what the Rotary Club of Kalookan has done is presently doing. There's no other way for our club but towards growth and further service.
