My Mother and Father
It was very quiet in our home. Most people only put their TVs on for an hour or two each day. All the kids on the block walked the 4 blocks to school together. Sometimes we went to the creek after school and skipped rocks...The summers seemed long and I usually went to the Day Camp run by the Sisters of Mercy, who taught us during the school year...I have some basketball trophies from the West Oak Lane Boys Club, but I liked baseball better...In eighth grade we all went to a banquet so I could receive a Certificate of Honor for an essay I had written on Fire Prevention - Yankee Pot Roast was the menu...We only used the best silverware for my Sacraments...
Usually we ate at the kitchen table, where I drew my comics and painted with my Mother...
...My Father loved Parades...I take my children to parades on the subway, the way we went...and sometimes I sing them to sleep, too...the way he used to...
I don't know what else there is to say, other than they loved me, and each other very much...and I still pray to them...
