History:
Unable to support his family through conventional means, electronics
expert Scott Lang turned his talents to burglary. Apprehended, Lang
furthered his studies in prison. After his early release for good
behavior, he was hired to work in the design department at Stark
International -- the corporation owned by Tony Stark, a.k.a. the armored
Avenger known as Iron Man. When his daughter was diagnosed with a serious
congenial heart condition, Lang sought the aid of surgeon Erica Sondhiem
-- only to learn she was being held prisoner at Cross Technological
Enterprises. Company President Darren Cross required her expertise to
correct his own heart condition and was unwilling to wait in line for her
unique services.Desperate to save his daughter, Lang again resorted to
burglary. He broke into the New Jersey home of Dr. Henry Pym, known to the
world as the diminutive hero called Yellowjacket, and stole the
scientist's original Ant-Man costume and several canisters of shrinking
gas. Pym observed the theft and followed Lang to Cross Technological
Enterprises, curious to discover his intentions. Garbed as Ant-Man, Lang
rescued Sondhiem. He planned to return the Ant-Man paraphernalia to its
owner, but Pym let him keep the costume -- provided he put it to lawful
use Since
adopting the guise of Ant-Man, Lang has gotten small on several occasions
to assist Iron Man, Earth's other super heroes and the authorities --
although he considers himself a part-time crimefighter. Following a
hostile takeover of Stark International, Lang resigned out of respect to
Stark and opened his own electronics store. When elastic inventor Reed
Richards was believed dead by his wife and teammates, Lang joined a new
incarnation of the fabled Fantastic Four under Invisible Woman's
leadership. A fountain of intellect and invention, he served as a valued
stand-in for Mr. Fantastic. Lang shared a number of adventures with the
team of superhuman adventurers, until Richards returned from his
other-dimensional exile.
Following
a battle with the sentient psionic menace known as Onslaught, the planet's
greatest costumed champions were shunted into an alternate reality. In a
world without heroes, Ant-Man again answered the call to action. Jim
Hammond, the World War II-era Human Torch, recruited Lang as an operative
for Heroes for Hire Inc. With the support of Oracle Inc. -- the
corporation owned by Prince Namor, the Atlantean Sub-Mariner -- Heroes for
Hire set out to fill the void left by the world's missing heroes...for a
price. Lang made himself known to his teammates during a mission to the
Eastern European nation of Symkaria.
Lang's
shrinking powers proved especially useful when Hammond, a robot,
malfunctioned and became inert. Ant-Man entered the android's body and
destroyed the virus that had infected his advanced cybernetic systems. The
members of Heroes for Hire went their separate ways when Namor saw fit to
diffuse Oracle Inc., but Lang stands ready to shrink to the occasion when
duty calls -- alone or alongside his former teammates, the Fantastic Four.
