The
legendary Kree warrior known as Captain Marvel wielded his cosmic powers
in defense of an entire galaxy...and Earth, his adopted homeworld. But in
the end, he was stricken by the one enemy he could not defeat: cancer.
Mar-Vell died not on the field of battle, but on a sickbed -- surrounded
by an awesome assemblage of adventurers, gathered to pay tribute to the
legacy of their fallen friend. Today, his crusade for universal justice
lives on in the heroic efforts of his son -- Genis, the new Captain Marvel
-- and his former partner, Rick Jones.

illusion throughout the universe.
Weapons:
Captain Marvel's atom-exchanging Nega-Bands enabled him to convert psionic
energy for a variety of uses -- including flight, faster-than-light

History: The Kree, a race of humanoid aliens, had built a
galaxy-spanning empire. But the Supreme Intelligence, a fusion of past
minds, was not satisfied. It encouraged breeding with other humanoid
species, as the original race of blue Kree had reached its evolutionary
peak. The members of the resultant subspecies, the white Kree, were
biologically similar to Earthlings. But when the breeding process failed
to infuse new vitality into the Kree gene pool, the Intelligence turned
its attention to mankind's genetic potential. It set out to rearrange a
single human's genetic structure so as to awaken in him vast psionic
ability -- creating, in essence, a harbinger of human evolution. Because
the Intelligence could not absorb an Earthman's mind, it planned to tie
the subject's psyche to that of a white Kree. The Intelligence would form
a link with the two beings, immediately gaining limitless psionic power.
Then, it would use the mindless, merged entity to destroy Earth so no
other alien race could exploit its inhabitants in such a manner.
Setting
its grand scheme into motion, the Supreme Intelligence orchestrated a coup
that resulted in the placement of a white Kree, Captain Mar-Vell, as its
spy on Earth. In so doing, the Intelligence was unaware it had helped
create the galaxy's greatest protector. After reporting for duty, Mar-Vell
assumed the identity of Dr. Walter Lawson. As time passed, his sympathy
for the people of Earth increased. Mar-Vell's partisan feelings even
caused him to disobey a direct order, and he was sentenced to death.
Shortly after escaping execution, he was hurled into the Negative Zone, an
antimatter universe existing alongside Earth. The Supreme Intelligence
telepathically enabled Mar-Vell to contact Rick Jones -- previously a
companion of the Incredible Hulk, green-skinned engine of mass
destruction, and Captain America, vaunted U.S. Super-Soldier. Mar-Vell's
image led Rick to an abandoned Kree base on Earth. There, the exiled Kree
instructed the teenager to don a pair of golden extraterrestrial
bracelets. Rick slammed the Nega-Bands together with all his might...and
his atoms traded places with those of Mar-Vell. The hero materialized on
Earth, while Rick was surrounded by a protective aura that allowed him to
survive in the Negative Zone. As long as each wore the bands, they
remained in total telepathic contact. Thus, the Supreme Intelligence had
created a bond between an Earthling and a white Kree.
Mar-Vell
later freed Rick from the Negative Zone using a dimensional doorway
created by elastic inventor Reed Richards, leader of the legendary team of
adventures called the Fantastic Four. Thereafter, both beings could exist
on Earth simultaneously and separately. When the warrior named Ronan
seized control of the Kree government and went to war with the race of
alien shapeshifters known as the Skrulls, the Supreme Intelligence
contacted Rick and activated the boy's untapped psionic potential: the
Destiny Force. Rick used his newfound abilities to paralyze both the Kree
and Skrull empires, allowing the Intelligence to return to dominance. In
return for his efforts, Rick was deactivated and lay on the brink of
death. As the Intelligence had anticipated, Mar-Vell again linked himself
to Rick so his life force could restore his partner.
Mar-Vell
returned to Earth only to discover that Rick's body could no longer
contain both beings' energies. Subsequently, Rick was bombarded with a
form of electromagnetic radiation that rendered him able to contain the
two life forces. Mar-Vell now found himself able to absorb solar radiation
to augment his strength and fire energy bolts. A short time later, Mar-Vell
became embroiled in a clash with the Eternal paramour of Death, Thanos,
who planned to end all life in the universe. Mar-Vell was teleported into
the presence of Eon, a galactic entity monitoring human evolution. Eon
granted the hero Cosmic Awareness and designated him protector of the
universe. In the wake of these changes, Mar-Vell became the primary
architect of Thanos' defeat.
When
Nitro, the Exploding Man, stole a powerful nerve gas, it was the strength
of Mar-Vell that sealed a leak in the canister. Mar-Vell collapsed, but
seemed to recover fully afterward. However, the gas had been carcinogenic.
After many a heroic adventure and countless victories, the cancer-causing
agent took its toll. Succumbing to an incurable systemic cancer, Mar-Vell
spent his last days on Saturn's moon, Titan. He died surrounded by Rick,
Earth's mightiest heroes, and various other friends and acquaintances.
Rick
slowly began to move on with his life, eventually marrying. But Mar-Vell's
love, Elysius, felt more alone than ever. Using Titanian science, she
sampled Mar-Vell's genetic structure to conceive a child. To protect him
from Captain Marvel's enemies, Genis was aged to maturity through
artificial means and sequestered on an isolated world. Upon discovering
his true lineage, he donned Nega-Bands similar to those worn by his
father, determined to carry on Mar-Vell's heroic legacy. Eventually, he
rechristened himself Captain Marvel. When Rick's Destiny powers
resurfaced, he and Genis became pawns in a time-spanning conflict. At the
climax of the Destiny War, Captain Marvel found himself unwillingly merged
with Rick, a process that triggered his latent Cosmic Awareness.
