The Yarnold-Yarnall-Yarnell family name originated in Worcestershire, England. The first recorded spelling of the family name in Worcestershire is shown to be that of John and Joan Yarnold, which was dated about 1460 A.D., benefactors of the church of St James Oddingley, Worcestershire, during the reign of King Henry VI of England 1422-1461.

This interesting and unusual name with variant spelling Yarnell, Yarnall, etc. is a dialectal variant of "Arnold", which itself derives from two possible sources. Firstly, it may be from a Norman personal name composed of the Germanic elements "arn", eagle, plus "wald", rule, a compound form popular with the warlike tribes of the period. Alternatively it may originate as a habitational name from places called "Arnold". These are named from the Old English elements "earn", eagle, and "hald", neck or hollow. The "Ye" part of the name indicates 'son of'.

From looking at ancient wills, we believe that the following three individuals are brothers. They are currently the furthest generation back that we have been able to trace.

2. John Yearnold (Yearnolds In Worcestershire1) was probably not very old when he died; as a reading of his will shows young children surviving him. He likely was born, then, about ABT. 1520-1530. He married Alice Bellamy. He was a prosperous yeoman in Worcestershire, owning a farm in the Parish of Oddingley, which he bequeathed to his eldest son, John. John Yearnold died ABT. 1575 in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England. He was buried in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England.

4. Richard Yearnold (Yearnolds In Worcestershire1) was probably born ABT. 1520-1535 in Worcestershire, England. He married Alice Glover, and was a farmer in Oddingley parish, Worcestershire, England. His will was written 30 AUG 1587, and he died 1587 in Oddingley, Worcestershire, England. Alice Glover died 1588-1589 in Oddingley, Worcestershire, England, naming their five children in her will.

She was born 1555 in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England, and died BEF. 1608 in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England. She was buried in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England. John Yarnold's will was written 20 FEB 1607/08 in the fourth year of the reign of King James. He died AFT. 20 FEB 1607/08 in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England. He was buried in Hadzor Parish, Worcestershire, England. His will provided that a tombstone be erected saying thus: "Here lyethe the bodye and bodyes of John yearnolde, sonne of John yearnolde and Elynor hys wyfe the daughter of Richarde Gower of Hadsor Gentylman".

15. Gower Yarnall (John Yarnold3, John Yearnold2, Yearnolds In Worcestershire1) was born OCT 1580. He married Jane. It appears that Gower's father, John, was highly displeased with Gower's marriage to this Jane, and his general disobedience and 'untowarde disposicion'; so much so, that he disinherited Gower in his will unless Gower give up "his ungodly courses, of swearing, drinking, swaggering and such like", at which time he would receive an annuity. There is no record that Gower ever changed his ways.

John Yarnall married Sarah Yarnall 22 APR 1648 in Martin Hussingtree, Worcestershire, England (a cousin to her husband). She died DEC 1704 in Martin Hussingtree, Worcester, England.

 

John Yarnall owned the estate of 'Brown Heath', Martin Hussingtree Parish, Worcestershire, England; such estate apparently being given to his eldest son Richard. John's will, written 5 OCT 1692, shows that his son Richard held the majority of the estate already, and was to pay sums of money to his siblings as bequests from his father. John Yarnall died in the first half of the year 1693 in Martin Hussingtree, Worcestershire, England; either before the inventory of his estate was taken on 21st APR 1693, or on 16 JUN 1693, such date coming from a notation on the will, thus: 'Defuncti 16 Junij 1693'.
