Gridley man dies

An Oroville man was arrested and booked for involuntary vehicular manslaughter after a Gridley motorcyclist died during a head-on collision on Highway 99 and East Biggs Highway Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Salomon Orosco of Oroville was driving a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria that turned in front of a 1988 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Phillip Yarnell of Gridley. The motorcycle collided with the vehicle, and both Yarnell and his passenger, who was his sister Kathleen Larson, were thrown from the motorcycle.

The California Highway Patrol said the collision occurred because Orosco had "failed to yield the right of way to the motorcyclist, who was proceeding straight through the intersection." Both the motorcyclist and passenger were wearing their helmets.

Yarnell was pronounced dead at the scene, and Larson suffered major injuries and was flown by the Reach 7 helicopter to the Enloe Medical Center in Chico. Orosco was arrested at the scene and booked into the Butte County Jail for misdemeanor involuntary vehicular manslaughter and for driving a vehicle without a license. Orosco did not have a California Driver's License, and the CHP report said alcohol was not a factor in this collision.
