I started playing drums at the age of 13. At Mt Vernon High School, Mt Vernon, Iowa, I played drums for the Marching band, Concert band, Pep band, Jazz band and Swing Choir. I received I's at the high school state solo contest. I won the Boddicker School of Music Studio Championship in 1976. I marched in the Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band from 1979-1982, including the Rose Bowl and the Peach Bowl. I studied percussion under professor Tom Davis at the University of Iowa. I marched with the Emerald Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1981. In 1976 I started playing drums for the Escorts and have been with them ever since.
