Weezer

                  Long Live Geek Rock!

I think I was about thirteen or fourteen when I picked up the first weezer album.  I remember not really digging the "Sweater Song" when it first came on MTV, but decided to give the band a try when I saw the video for "Buddy Holly"  (As I think most of America did).  I popped it in my cd player, and from the first few notes of "My Name is Jonas" I was hooked.  It's was one of those few moments in our lives where we find something new and spectacular.  Weezer to me was instantly personal.  The music, lyrics, and the subjects of the songs.....these guys just did what they wanted.  They didn't put up a pretense, and they weren't really yelling about all the crap that bothered them.  They were just writing songs about surfing, girlfriends, growing up, and hiding out in the garage of your house.  To me, Weezer was a great way to come out of the flannel burdened days of grunge and into......well, I guess Weezer.

Since then they came out with their second album Pinkerton.  Which showed the versatility of the band.  Darker and sadder than the first, Pinkerton talked alot about girls, shitty jobs, sex, picking yourself up, and love.  Pinkerton sealed my lifelong allegance to the band, as I'm sure it did to the fans who weren't just along for the next "Buddy Holly".

However, it is time for a third album.  I know that some people have left, and the Rentals (another fine fine band) are a full time band now.  From what I've read on some fan sites though, it seems that Rivers Cuomo has written the new album and is waiting for his braces to get taken off so that they can record it.  Figures, the band that almost invented geek rock would get held back by braces.
