               EXT. VOGELWEH AIR FORCE HOUSING-GERMANY-AFTERNOON

DAVE, 19, walks along the sidewalk in the park with his
               girlfriend ALICIA, 18.

                                   ALICIA
So when is your dad leaving?

                                   DAVE
                         Tuesday.

                                   ALICIA
                         That sucks.

                                   DAVE
                             (dismissive)
                         Yeah, I guess.

Alicia grabs his hand as they walk. He pries it away.

                                   DAVE
                         Don't.

                                   ALICIA
                         You're such a punk.

                                   DAVE
What, I don't like holding hands.

                                   ALICIA
                             (mocking)
                         I don't like holding hands.

                                   DAVE
                         Shut up.

She slaps her hand against his ass and squeezes a chunk as
               they continue to walk.

               INT. DAVE'S APARTMENT-EVENING

The front door slams shut. Dave's mom, CINDY, pulls herself
away from her book and looks up. Dave pops his head in the
               living room.

                                   DAVE
                         Where's dad?

                                   CINDY
He had to go talk to the commander.

                                   DAVE
                         Oh.

               Dave starts towards his bedroom.

                                   CINDY
                         Dave.

He pops his head back in.

                                   DAVE
                         Yeah?

                                   CINDY
Did you look for a job today?

Dave drops his head to the side obviously agitated with the
               redundancy of the question.

                                   DAVE
                         Mom.

                                   CINDY
Alright, but you know what your
dads gonna do as soon as he gets
                         home.

                                   DAVE
Yes I know, run in the room to ask
me that same question. I'm hoping
to get to sleep before he gets
                         back.

                                   CINDY
You know, he's going to be in Iraq
for an entire year. You might want
to try and smooth things over
                         before he leaves.

               Dave withdraws from the room.

                                   DAVE
                         I know mom.

                                   CINDY
                         Good night.

                                   DAVE
                         Night.

               His bedroom door slams shut.

               INT. DAVE'S ROOM-MORNING

               SUPERIMPOSE: TUESDAY MORNING

Dave's father, JIM, walks in and over to the bed. He gently
shakes Dave's shoulder. Dave slowly opens his eyes. He sees
an etherial silhouette shrouded with light. As his father
comes into focus he rubs his eyes.

                                   JIM
                         I'm off buddy.

                                   DAVE
                         Alright. You leaving.

                                   JIM
                         Yeah.
                             (Beat)
Do me a favor Dave. Don't sit
around here for too long. I know
you don't want to go back to school
                         but... Just do something alright.

                                   DAVE
                         Alright.

                                   JIM
                         I'll see you later.

                                   DAVE
                         OK.

Jim quickly hugs him and walks out. Dave sits in silence for
a moment, then sits up and looks out the window.

               Jim hugs Cindy goodbye.

Dave quickly scoots to the edge of his bed, grabs a shoe and
               puts it on.

He looks for the other but doesn't see it.

He looks out the window again.

Jim gets into the car and drives away.

Dave sits back down, takes his shoe off and throws it on the
               ground.

He plops his head down on the pillow and lays with a vacant
               expression.

               INT. DAVE'S HOUSE-EVENING

               SUPERIMPOSE: 2 MONTHS LATER

Dave walks in the front door and down the hall towards the
               living room.

                                   DAVE
Well, guess what mom. I finally got
                         a job.

He walks into the living room and his mother is standing by
the phone wiping her already red, puffy nose. The cheer is
instantly stripped from his face. He stares at her for a
               moment.

                                   DAVE
                         Is it dad?

                                   CINDY
                         He's gone sweetheart.

She falls into a nearby chair and breaks down crying. Dave
hugs her with seemingly no emotion.

                                   CINDY
What are we going to do?

Dave says nothing, just continues hugging her.

               EXT. DAVE'S BALCONY-NIGHT

Dave leans on the balcony rail and blankly stares at the
trees as Alicia walks out. He looks at her and stands up off
               the rail.

                                   DAVE
                         Hey.

                                   ALICIA
                         Hey.
                             (Beat)
                         Your mom called me.

                                   DAVE
                         Oh.

He stands with his thumbs in his pockets. Alicia walks up
behind him and slowly intertwines her right hand with his
left and squeezes it. He squeezes back and a tear falls from
               each of his eyes.

                                   DAVE
                         I got a job.
